The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team returns to the friendly confines of Cliff Keen Arena for the first time in more than a month, when they host the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes in a Big Ten matchup Saturday (March 9) at 1 p.m.
Wolverine Bites
• U-M returns home to Cliff Keen Arena after five weeks and will host Iowa. After hosting the Hawkeyes on Saturday, Michigan will then travel to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions as well as the Illinois Fighting Illini on March 16 in a tri-meet that could determine the Big Ten landscape. U-M will then conclude its Big Ten slate with a matchup against Nebraska on March 23 in Lincoln, before closing out the regular season on March 30 against Illinois-Chicago in Cliff Keen Arena.
• Based off season averages, U-M ranks in the top-five on five of six events. The squad's highest ranking is on vault, checking in at No. 2 with a 72.200 average. Michigan is No. 3 on floor exercise (70.333), as well as fourth on parallel bars (68.967) and high bar (67.050). On rings, the Maize & Blue are fifth with a 68.267, and seventh on pommel horse with a 66.333 mark. The Hawkeyes rank in the top-10 on four events, highlighted by a 67.450 on still rings to rank sixth.
• Sophomore Cameron Bock is U-M's top all-arounder, ranking third in the country with a three-score average of 81.967. He also ranks second on parallel bars with a 14.567, and seventh on high bar (14.033), and ninth on pommel horse (14.050). Iowa's lone gymnast ranked in the top-15 on an event is Bennett Huang, who checks in at No. 11 with a 79.917 in the all-around competition.
• Michigan boasts a pair of gymnasts that rank in the top five on individual events in sophomore Jacob Moore who is No. 5 on floor exercise (14.550), and senior Emyre Cole, who ranks second on vault (14.800)
• Based on the RoadToNationals impact difference metric, Bock leads the Wolverines in the category with a score of 8.8, followed by Cole (7.7) and Moore (6.4). Bock also boasts the title of team MVP with a total team score of 465.70, with Cole also breaking the 400-plateau at 431.80. The impact difference metric is intended to give an idea of what impact a gymnast would have if he were removed from the meet for some reason.
• Entering the meat of the Big Ten schedule, U-M is the lone team in the conference with an undefeated mark (2-0). Illinois is in second with a 2-1 mark, while Penn State and Ohio State sit at 1-1. This week's opponent Iowa, as well Nebraska are 1-2, while Minnesota is the lone winless squad at 0-2. This year is the first year that the Big Ten will award a regular-season champion.
• Michigan owns a 15-7 advantage in the all-time series against Iowa, including a win over the Hawkeyes in the Windy City Invitational (Jan. 19) by a 402.000-394.800 margin. The last time U-M hosted Iowa in a dual meet was during the 2007 season.
