The University of Michigan men's golf team will host the 2019 Desert Mountain Intercollegiate Saturday and Sunday (March 9-10) at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course. The fifth-annual event will feature 12 teams in the field, playing 54 holes over the two-day tournament. Day one will consist of 36 holes of stroke play, followed by a final 18 on day two. The Outlaw Course will be set up for a par 72 and 7,107 yards. Scoring will be five players, count the low four scores. Selected teams will be allowed an invited individual.
The Tournament Field
There will be 12 teams competing at the 2019 Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, including -- Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Harvard, Kansas, Lipscomb, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Northwestern and Rutgers. There will be nine total invited individuals competing – Kansas, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Michigan (3), Michigan State, Mississippi State and Northwestern.
The Tournament Schedule
Friday, March 8 -- Practice Round (18) tee times off No. 1 starting at 9 a.m. MST (Michigan, 9:30 a.m.)
Saturday, March 9 -- First Round (18) begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. MST
Saturday, March 9 -- Second Round (18) continuous play following completion of first round
Sunday, March 10 -- Final Round (18) begins with tee times off No. 1 & 11 at 8:30 a.m. MST
The Michigan Lineup
With the spring break training trip culminating with the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, the starting five and three Wolverine individuals will be determined throughout the week's practice and play. Heading to Arizona will be fifth-year senior Ian Martin, senior Nick Carlson, juniors Brent Ito and Taisei Negishi, sophomores Charlie Pilon and Henry Spring and freshmen Ben Dunne and Patrick Sullivan.
History at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate
• Michigan is hosting its spring break event for the fifth straight season at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course. The Wolverines won the 2017 title and have finished as the runner-up in the 2015, 2016 and 2018 events.
• [ 2018 Recap ] With co-medalists Kyle Mueller and Charlie Pilon the Wolverines finished tied for the runner-up spot with Purdue -- U-M's third top two finish.
• [ 2017 Recap ] Playing with only four in the final round as Kyle Mueller withdrew due to illness, Michigan held off Northwestern to win the first team title in its spring-hosted event.
• [ 2016 Recap ] Four Wolverines finished under par for 54-holes and closed among the top 10 individually, helping U-M to its second straight runner-up finish with an 851 (-13) team total.
• [ 2015 Recap ] With top 10 finishes from Chris O'Neill (2nd, 210, -6) and Kyle Mueller (t-7th, 216, E), U-M tied for the runner-up spot in the inaugural event with an 873 team total.
• In 12 team rounds, U-M has recorded seven sub-par team totals including a U-M tournament-low 277 (-11) at in the 2017 first round. The next lowest was a 278 (-10) in the 2016 first round.

Wolverine Bites
• Nick Carlson is expected to start his 41st career event at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. The rest of the Wolverines squad combined for 50 total starts -- Charlie Pilon (15), Brent Ito (14), Henry Spring (12), Ben Dunne (four), Patrick Sullivan (three) and Ian Martin (two).
• Nick Carlson continues to lead the Wolverines in scoring with his 72.67 per round average. He leads U-M with six sub-par round including a career-low-tying 67 (-4) in the final round of the Fighting Irish Classic -- the fourth time in his career. After Carlson, Brent Ito is second at 73.20, Charlie Pilon is third at 73.53 and Henry Spring is fourth at 73.75.
• As a team, U-M is averaging 292.67 per round. So far this season the Wolverines improve as each event goes out as they have averaged 299.0 in opening rounds. The Maize and Blue improve by seven shots in the second round -- 292.20 -- and have closed with a sub-par average of 286.80.
• Using the career-low final rounds by Brent Ito (64, -7), Charlie Pilon (65, -6) and Nick Carlson (67, -4) in the final round of the Fighting Irish Classic, Michigan set a new team single-round tally of 267 (-17). The amazing score lowered the previous best tally by three shots -- 270 (-14) totaled in the final round of the 2016 Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 19-20) -- which was paced by a Carlson 67 (-4).
• Brent Ito recorded the second-lowest round in program history with his 64 (-7) in the final round of the Fighting Irish Classic. Ito used seven birdies and 11 pars to record his career-best round and lower it by three shots. It is the fifth time a 64 has been recorded by a Wolverine golfer and was a single shot away from the U-M record 63 (-7) from former All-American Kyle Mueller (2015-18).

• With his final round 64 (-7) at the Fighting Irish Classic, Brent Ito went on to record a career-best 207 (-6) 54-hole tournament total as well as his first career top 20 finish -- tying for 15th. In addition to Ito's career-lows at the Warren Golf Course, Nick Carlson tied his career low with a 67 (-4) in the final round, as did Charlie Pilon, who posted a career-low 65 (-6) in the final round. Pilon's tally also led to a career-low 211 (-2) 54-hole tournament total.
• After spending his first three years on U-M's Club Team, fifth-year senior Ian Martin went undefeated at the Big Ten Match Play with a 3-0-1 record in his first varsity event. After halving his match with Purdue's Andrew Lewis, Martin went on to post victories over Iowa's Jake Rowe (8-and-6), Minnesota's Will Grevlos (3-and-2) and Penn State's James McHigh (1-up). Martin was one of two Wolverines to finish with an unblemished record as Charlie Pilon as closed the event 3-0-1. In his first stroke play event, He got off to a slow start, but rallied in the final round shooting a career-best 69 (-1) -- the Wolverines ninth sub-70 round of the season.
