ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan baseball team (8-2) will conclude its spring break trip to California this weekend (March 8-10) with three games as part of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic in Los Angeles.
The Wolverines will first play at No. 2 UCLA at 6 p.m. PST Friday (March 8) at Jackie Robinson Stadium before heading to USC for a 6 p.m. PST game Saturday (March 9) at Dedeaux Field. The Maize and Blue will then wrap the weekend and the California trip with a neutral-site contest against Oklahoma State at 10:30 a.m. PDT Sunday (March 10) at Dodger Stadium.
• Michigan appeared in the same round-robin tournament during the 2017 season and posted a 2-1 record on the weekend with wins over USC and San Diego. The Wolverines are 1-0 all-time when playing inside Dodger Stadium.
• The Wolverines are now 8-2 on the season and 2-2 on their West Coast swing after dropping back-to-back contests. After starting out the 2019 campaign on an eight-game win streak, Michigan suffered its first loss of the year on Sunday (March 3) at Cal State Northridge and then dropped a midweek game at perennial baseball power Long Beach State on Tuesday (March 5). The Maize and Blue looked to get back in the win column with a game at UC Irvine on Wednesday (March 6), but the contest was rained out.
• Michigan has posted a conference-low 2.15 earned run average through the first 10 games, which ranks eighth-lowest among Division I schools. The Wolverine pitching staff also leads the Big Ten with just 6.03 hits allowed per nine innings (12th in NCAA), 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings (42nd in NCAA), and 2.76 walks allowed per nine innings (20th in NCAA).
• Offensively, Michigan leads the Big Ten in slugging (.417), stolen bases (30) and triples (3). The Wolverines also rank in the top three among conference opponents in batting average, doubles, home runs, sacrifice flies and runs scored.
• Following its West Coast trip, Michigan will return to Ann Arbor for its home-opening series against Manhattan (March 15-17). The Wolverines have spent the first four weekends of the 2019 season on the road, with trips to Florida, South Carolina and California.
• Junior left-handed pitcher Tommy Henry earned his second consecutive Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award following eight shutout innings in a win at Cal State Northridge last Friday (March 1). Henry threw another efficient game, using 90 pitches to strike out 12 batters against just three hits and a walk. Through his three starts, Henry has not allowed a run while striking out 34 batters against just 10 hits in 23.0 innings. His 34 strikeouts rank second in the NCAA.
• Michigan is ranked 16th by D1Baseball.com and the NCBWA, 18th by Baseball America, and 19th by Perfect Game. Additionally, the Wolverines dropped one spot in the Collegiate Baseball News poll this week to 26th. Michigan is the only Big Ten Conference team in all of the national polls.
