
Michigan Blanks Rutgers, Stays Perfect in Big Ten Action

» Michigan rallied to win the doubles point, coming back from a 5-3 deficit at No. 2 to win the first point of the match. Anca Craciun and Giulia Pairone fought off two match points and won in the tiebreaker.

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its Big Ten Conference record to 10-0 behind a 4-0 shutout of Rutgers on Saturday (April 13) at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. With the win, Michigan has clinched at least a share of the Big Ten championship.
U-M took the early lead on the Scarlet Knights behind wins at the top two doubles spots. Seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor stayed perfect in conference action, breezing to a 6-0 win at the top spot. Rutgers pulled even behind a 6-3 win at No. 3, taking advantage of an early lead and never looking back.
Michigan was down, 5-3, at No. 2 when the match at No. 3 ended. Junior Giulia Pairone and freshman Anca Craciun fought off two match points on Pairone's serve to stay in the match and get within 5-4. The Scarlet Knights had a chance to serve out the match in the next game, but Michigan won the first two points to take control en route to pulling even at 5.
Craciun held in her next service game after the Wolverines dropped the first two points of the game. Rutgers answered with a hold as well, sending the match to a tiebreaker. Michigan closed the breaker strong, winning the final three points to break a 4-4 tie and take the match with a 7-6 (4) win for the match's first point.
Fahey put Michigan's second point on the board, easing to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top spot back in her home state of New Jersey. Sophomore Alyvia Jones was next off court for the Wolverines, dropping just two games at No. 5 in a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Moments later, Minor put the finishing touches on the Michigan victory behind a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2. Minor raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set en route to U-M's fourth point. The remaining three matches on court were abandoned.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular season Sunday (April 14) at Maryland. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
