The University of Michigan women's track and field team scored a trio of event victories and posted numerous career-best performances on its only day of competition at the Louisville Invitational on Saturday (April 13).
Both Chloe Foster and Micaela DeGenero posted individual wins in personal-record fashion in the 400-meter hurdles and 800-meter run, respectively, and joined forces at meet's end to run legs of the victorious 4x400 relay.
Their individual career-best efforts were among 15 on the day for the Wolverine women, and their wins were among the 11 top-five finishes recorded by the squad.
Foster was the runaway winner in the 400-meter hurdles as she clocked a significant career-best of 58.60 -- nearly three-quarters of a second better than her PR from earlier this season -- as she was the only woman under a minute in the race.
The performance not only moves her up to No. 5 in school history, it bolsters her already strong position to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries in May. The top 48 women from the NCAA East Region at the conclusion of the regular season in each event secure their berths to the Prelims, which serve as the opening rounds for the NCAA Championships.
DeGenero likewise put herself in Prelims qualifying position with her 2:07.69, which was more than a second faster than anyone else in the field. Coming into the meet on the outside of the projected qualifying bubble with a personal-record 2:08.45 from earlier this year, she now carries a time that would have been fast enough to qualify for all nine years of the NCAA East Prelims.
On the heels of their individual performances, they teamed up with Alice Hill and Jenna Reid to clock 3:43.22 for the win in the 4x400 relay to close out the meet.
Hill was herself a top-five individual finisher for the Wolverines as she clocked a career-best 4:24.56 for fourth at 1,500 meters as she tunes up for her eventual 3,000-meter steeplechase debut later this season. So, too, was Reid as she finished third behind Foster in the hurdles.
Also posting career-best performances for top-five finishes on the track were third-place Julia Hall at 400 meters (55.59) and third-place Meg Darmofal at 3,000 meters (9:28.50).
Katt Miner was the top field event performer for the Wolverines on the day with a fifth-place finish in the high jump, thanks to a season's best 1.70m (5 feet, 7 inches) clearance. Just outside the top five in her event was long jumper Jeryne Fish, who has bounced back from a 2017-2018 season lost to injury for a new long jump personal-record 5.80m (19-0.5) (+0.8m/s) on Saturday.
