LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan rowing program put forward a solid day of racing against two of the nation's best programs on Lake Las Vegas on Saturday (April 20), racing three boats in a championship format. The Maize and Blue first varsity four earned U-M a win in the final race of the morning, and the second varsity eight placed second in a very competitive race.
"It was great to take our team west to race against such high-level opponents at this point in the season," said head coach Mark Rothstein.
"We didn't have the result we wanted in the 1V8 race, but we'll get back to work and get better. The 2V8 race was an exciting boat race between all three teams and our 1V4 was really great today. It's beneficial for us to be on the water with teams like this and this weekend is something we will use to make us better."
The day's events began with a second varsity four race, but U-M did not bring a 2V4 boat to compete. Instead, U-M's first race was the 1V8 event.
The top-ranked Huskies won with the biggest split of the morning, as UW (6:18.84) put open water between their boat and their Big Ten opponents, with Ohio State coming in second place more than four seconds behind and Michigan in third.
Â
In the 2V8 race, it was Washington out front again, but there was a photo finish behind them with the Buckeyes and Wolverines inches apart as they came across the finish line. Ultimately, U-M edged out OSU for second place in 6:27.51, just 0.08 seconds ahead of the Buckeyes.
Â
Finally, Michigan's 1V4 earned the team's highlight win of the day. The Wolverines established an early lead of three-to-four seats in the first 500 meters of the race, and executed well from there out. The Buckeyes fell a bit off-pace, but Washington hung around and gave Michigan all it could handle over the latter half of the race. The Huskies' push late was held off by a strong sprint from the Wolverines, and U-M closed its weekend in Las Vegas on a strong note in 7:05.68 with Washington 1.95 seconds behind.
Up next for the Wolverines will be hosting Louisville and Michigan State on Belleville Lake in Belleville, Michigan on Sunday, May 5.Â
