ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team used a pair of extra-base hits, including a go-ahead home run off the bat of freshman left fielder Lexie Blair, to rally to a 4-1 win in the series opener against Indiana on Friday evening (April 5) in front of a crowd of 1,357 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The Wolverines extended their win streak to 13 straight games.
Blair's homer was her fourth of the season and followed senior center fielder Natalie Peters' flared leadoff single in the bottom of the third. The Wolverine newcomer connected with a 0-1 pitch and launched a two-run shot deep over the right-field wall. Blair went 2-for-4 with two RBI -- her 16th multi-hit and sixth multi-RBI game of the season. She leads the Wolverines with 31 RBI on the season.
Peters, who went 3-for-3, earned a pair of RBI of her own in the fourth frame with a two-out, double to the wall in right-center field. Junior right fielder Haley Hoogenraad and senior catcher Katie Alexander set the table, leading off the inning with a single to center and a subsequent error at first base. Peters and Blair, hitting second and third in the Wolverine order, combined for five of U-M's six hits on the day.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien (14-3) struck out eight Hoosier batters and allowed one run on five hits and a walk.
Indiana scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning off a pair of two-out hits. The Hoosiers threatened again with baserunners in the fifth and sixth innings. Beaubien used a third-out strikeout to get out of the first jam before a double play and a caught stealing ended the latter.
Michigan (25-10, 7-0 Big Ten) will continue its weekend series against Indiana with a 2 p.m. slate Saturday (April 6) at Alumni Field. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
