ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team battled through a back-and-forth contest in the series opener against Indiana, but a late surge and a lengthy rain delay swung momentum the wrong way as U-M fell to the Hoosiers, 8-4, on Friday (April 24) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
After a quiet start, Michigan broke through in the bottom of the third inning. Senior first baseman Madi Ramey sparked the rally with a leadoff single up the middle, and with two outs, sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz delivered a looping fly ball to right field that eluded a diving attempt and allowed senior designated player Indiana Langford to score from first base for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as Indiana answered with a leadoff solo home run in the fourth to even the score. Another two-out solo shot in the fifth gave the Hoosiers their first lead at 2-1, but Michigan responded immediately in the home half.
Ramey continued her standout day, launching a line-drive solo homer to right field -- her fourth of the season -- to again tie the game. Two batters later, Langford worked a two-out walk to keep the inning alive, setting the stage again for Putz, who crushed the first pitch she saw for a two-run homer to the top row of the right-center bleachers. It was her 19th homer of the season and third in as many games.
The lead did not hold. In the sixth inning, Indiana used a two-run home run to center field to knot the score before a 52-minute rain delay halted play. The Hoosiers maintained their momentum after the delay, capitalizing with a two-out, two-run double to right-center field and an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-4.
IU added insurance with a leadoff solo homer in the seventh. Michigan threatened in its final turn at the plate, as Ramey singled and Langford reached on a two-out swinging bunt, but the Wolverines were unable to complete the comeback, stranding two runners on a flyout to center field.
Erin Hoehn (6-5) started and took the loss after walking the go-ahead run prior to the rain delay; she allowed five runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts through five innings. Gabby Ellis came in after the delay and allowed three more runs on three hits and a walk. All eight of the Hoosiers' runs came on extra-base hits.
The Wolverines (29-18, 7-12 Big Ten) will square off with Indiana at 2 p.m. Saturday (April 25) at Hutchins Stadium. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office, and the game will be streamed on B1G+.
