ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman shortstop Kiley Carr delivered a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to propel the University of Michigan softball team to a dramatic 9-8 win over Indiana on Saturday (April 25) in a back-and-forth battle at the Wilpon Complex, home of Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
Indiana tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth before Michigan promptly loaded the bases in the bottom half as three of the first four batters reached on a pair of free passes and a single from junior center fielder Jenissa Conway. IU used a punchout for its second, but Carr followed with a first-pitch, three-run double into the right-center field gap to push U-M in front 9-6 -- its biggest lead of the day.
The Hoosiers did not go quietly in the seventh. After a strikeout, a walk and a flyout, the Hoosiers launched a two-out, two-run homer to left-center field to cut the Michigan lead to one. The Wolverines held on, retiring the final batter on another flyout to left field to close out the series-tying win.
Both teams scored runs in five separate innings, and the game featured three lead changes and three ties.
Indiana struck first in the opening frame, using a two-out RBI single and a fielding error to plate a pair of runs and take an early 2-0 lead.
Michigan answered in the second. After leadoff singles from redshirt junior catcher Lilly Vallimont and senior third baseman Maddie Erickson set the table and a sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position, senior first baseman Madi Ramey lifted a sac fly to center to get the Wolverines on the board, and senior second baseman Janelle Ilacqua followed with a two-out, line-drive single to center, scoring Erickson from second to even the score.
The Hoosiers briefly regained the lead with a two-out RBI single in the third, but Michigan responded immediately in the bottom half with aggressive baserunning. After sophomore right fielder Lauren Putz singled to lead off and later moved to third, she broke for home on a double steal. Junior left fielder Ella Stephenson put herself in a rundown between first and second, and Putz committed and slid in safely after forcing an errant throw.
Ramey gave Michigan its first lead in the fourth, launching a leadoff home run to right-center field -- her fifth homer of the season and second of the series -- to make it 4-3.
Indiana answered again in the fifth, using a two-run double to jump back in front, but U-M responded immediately. Conway led off with a double over the IU shortstop's head, and Vallimont crushed a first-pitch, two-run homer to right field -- her seventh of the year -- to reclaim a 6-5 advantage.
The Hoosiers used the sac fly to even the score at 6-6 in the sixth and set the stage for Michigan's game-defining rally in the home half.
Junior right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn (7-5) earned the victory in relief, allowed two runs on one hit and two walks over the last 1.2 innings. Junior RHP Gabby Ellis started and pitched the bulk of the innings, giving up four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts over the first four innings.
The Wolverines (30-18, 8-12 Big Ten) will wrap up their series against Indiana with the rubber game at 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 26) at Hutchins Stadium. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office and will be streamed live on B1G+.
