COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team outscored No. 2 Maryland, 5-1, in the third quarter, but was unable to overcome a 10-4 halftime deficit and eventually fell to the Terrapins, 16-12, on Saturday (April 6) at Capitol One Field.
Michigan (3-7, 0-2 B1G) jumped out to a 2-1 lead after goals from senior Brent Noseworthy on the extra-man and sophomore Alex Buckanavage in the opening nine minutes of play. The score was tied at 3 after the first quarter, as U-M forced four turnovers to help mitigate a 6-1 deficit at the faceoff dot.
Maryland (9-2, 1-1 B1G) then appeared to put the game out of reach in the second quarter, outscoring U-M, 7-1. The Terps offense was paced by a pair of goals from Louis Dubick and Logan Wisnauskas, and Maryland held a 10-4 lead at halftime.
U-M crept back into the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Terps, 5-1, with a pair of markers coming from senior Decker Curran as U-M trailed, 11-9, heading into the final quarter.
With the game within reach, the Terrapins proved to be too much, rattling off four unanswered goals to start the fourth to lead by as many as six goals at 15-9 with just over five minutes remaining.
Sophomore Kevin Mack scored a pair in the final five minutes, and Buckanavage added his third of the day with 10 seconds to go, but it was not enough.
Michigan turned the ball over a season-low 10 times, and the plus-four goal margin in the third quarter ties a season best. Longpole Finn Goonan had four ground balls and a caused turnover, while close defender Nick DeCaprio had three ground balls and a caused turnover.
