CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan rowing program completed an impressive sweep of three ACC opponents, including two ranked foes, on Lake Monticello on Saturday (April 6). The Wolverines dispatched of No. 10 Virginia during morning races and defeated No. 17 Syracuse and Duke in the afternoon session of racing. The Wolverines have now swept ranked opponents from the Ivy League and ACC to start the 2019 season.
"Any time you can win races against really good programs like we raced today, that's a good thing," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "We were pleased to be able to come away with some really good victories, and we're excited to get faster, grow and improve."

Both varsity eight boats contributed to the day's highlights. The first varsity eight beat Virginia in 6:30.5 (+7.3), then came back and topped Syracuse (+4.3) and Duke in the afternoon, timing 6:26.5.

The second varsity eight boat won both its races, too, albeit in much closer fashion. After besting UVA in 6:36.0 (+4.7) early on, the Wolverines inched ahead of Duke in the afternoon race in 6:35.3, just +0.8 ahead of the Blue Devils.

The 1V4 won by more than 10 seconds in the morning (7:18.6) and by more than seven seconds in the afternoon (7:24.2), continuing its own undefeated start.

The 2V4 won both their races as well, with one closer finish in 7:23.6 (+4.2) and one more comfortable win in 7:33.4 (+11.8). The 3V4 had two wins by relaxed margins as well, including the biggest win of the day: a +19.0-second victory against Virginia in the morning in 7:29.2.

That Michigan's success came from contributions made by every boat made the day that much sweeter.

"Top-to-bottom all the boats really had bright spots and they all showed some things that needed to be improved," said Rothstein.
"We're in a good spot, but the biggest thing that we are seeing right now, is these athletes are excited to get back to practice. Regardless of times, regardless of race results, they want to get back to work and keep getting faster. That's exciting to see."
Up next for the Wolverines will be a trip to Columbus, Ohio, to race fellow conference foes Ohio State and Rutgers next Saturday (April 13). Michigan will enter the weekend as the top Big Ten team represented in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll.
