ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team outhit visiting Indiana University but was unable to break through in key situations Saturday (May 11) as the Wolverines fell to the Hoosiers, 9-7, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.

With the win, Indiana (33-17, 14-6 Big Ten) moves within a half-game of first place Michigan (36-13, 14-5 Big Ten) in the conference standings

Indiana broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the third inning on three hits, a walk, wild pitch and passed ball.

Junior left-hander Tommy Henry (8-4) used strikeouts to earn the last two outs of each of the first four innings, which gave him eight through the early portion of the game but the Hoosiers maintained control of the scoreboard.

Michigan got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as junior right fielder Jordan Brewer laced a ball to center field and hustled into second with a leadoff double. Two batters later senior third baseman Blake Nelson scored Brewer with a single up the middle. A hard single from redshirt senior left fielder Miles Lewis and walk to sophomore shortstop Jack Blomgren loaded the bases for sophomore catcher Joe Donovan, who lofted a shallow fly to left, The catch was pulled in by Indiana shortstop Justin Walker, but Lewis tagged from third anyway, surprising the Hoosiers, who did not attempt a play at home. Indiana escaped further damage with a 3-2 lead.

Indiana regained those runs and more in the top of the fifth as Matt Lloyd and Cole Barr delivered a pair of two-run homers as the Hoosiers built a 7-2 lead.

Michigan answered with three runs in the sixth as Donovan scored two with a long double to left and came home on a two-out single from sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu. Again, Indiana answered, as it scored twice in the top of the seventh to keep the Wolverines at an arm's length.

The home team kept trying to get back into the game. With two outs, Lewis scored Kerr all the way from first with a double to the wall in left and Blomgren followed with a long double to center field to make it a 9-7 game and force Indiana back to the bullpen. Indiana got out of that jam and added an insurance run in the ninth when Elijah Dunham lofted a homer over the short left-field fence.

Lewis singled home Brewer (single) in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wolverines could not push across the tying run.

Henry took the loss the U-M after allowing seven hits over 4.2 innings. Brewer, Nwogu, Nelson and Blomgren all had two hits while Lewis had three hits for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines will take on Indiana on Sunday (May 12) looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Hoosiers while increasing their lead in the Big Ten standings. First pitch from Wilpon Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
