Michigan Breezes Past UIC in NCAA Tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team breezed past UIC, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon (May 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court to record the shutout.
Michigan grabbed the early lead by virtue of the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3.
U-M's top pair of seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor moved to 12-1 at the top spot behind a 6-0 win.
Moments later, Michigan's No. 3 duo of junior Lera Patiuk and sophomore Alyvia Jones clinched the point behind a 6-1 win. The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, grabbing the match's first point.
It was all Michigan in singles as the Wolverines won all six first sets.
Fahey was the first Wolverine off court, not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1. With the win, Fahey sits alone atop Michigan's all-time wins list with 130 victories. Fahey passed Emina Bektas (2012-15), who previously held the mark with 129 victories.
Junior Giulia Pairone put Michigan's second point on the board behind a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2.
It was a race between Minor and Jones to provide the fourth point, as both Wolverines held 5-1 advantages in their second sets simultaneously. Minor came through first, wrapping up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 to run her win streak to 11 matches and put the fourth point on the board.
The remaining three matches on court were abandoned.
With the win, Michigan advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to face Kentucky on Saturday (May 4) at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.Â
