EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Playing as an individual in her first NCAA postseason, University of Michigan women's golf freshman Ashley Lau carded an opening 76 today (Monday, May 6) and is tied for 43rd after the first round of the 54-hole NCAA East Lansing Regional being played at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
"I didn't hit the ball as well as I wanted to today; however, I gave myself some easy chips and converted those," said Lau. "My putting was a little off today, and that cost me some birdie opportunities. There is plenty of golf left. Even though I wish my teammates were here, being here is just fantastic. Seeing the NCAA signs everywhere makes this an amazing experience."
As U-M's lone representative, Lau started her regional play off the 10th tee and rattled off eight straight pars as she missed three birdie opportunities. Her approach to No. 18 fell short, leaving her an uphill chip to the elevated green. After landing seven feet short, Lau missed her par putt, yielding her first blemish of the day with a bogey as she made the turn one over par.
Early front-side putting misses cost Lau as she double-bogeyed No. 2 and bogeyed No. 4 to move to four over with five holes remaining. She closed her opening round with five straight pars, giving her 15 pars on the day and a four-over total of 76. She finished with 32 putts (18 front side, 14 back nine).
Lau, one of six individuals invited to the East Lansing Regional, will start her second round off the 10th hole again at 8:55 a.m. She will be paired with Notre Dame's Emma Albrecht and East Tennessee State's Tereza Melecka. The top six finishing schools and the top three individuals of a non-qualifying team will advance the NCAA Finals May 17-22 at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
