EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After waiting through two delays lasting nearly seven hours, University of Michigan women's golf freshman Ashley Lau posted a second-round 77 on Tuesday (May 7) and is tied for 58th after 36 holes of the NCAA East Lansing Regional being played at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
"Today was just a long day," said Lau. "Waking up at 6:30 a.m. and waiting for six hours was a little tough. Today I was striking the ball much better and hit 13 of 14 fairways, however, nothing was working for me around the greens. I am looking to really put it all together for tomorrow's final round."
After overnight rains caused standing water on the West Course, the field was delayed three hours to allow the course to dry. As more rains fell during the mid-morning hours, play was delayed again. After an additional four-hour delay, the field finally teed off with a 2:45 shotgun start.
Playing as an individual, Lau followed up her opening 76 with a 77 in today's second round. Starting off the 17th hole, Lau begin with five straight pars, mirroring her start from the day before after she posted eight consecutive pars. The second round drew its first blemish after she bogeyed the fourth hole, which would be the first of six bogeys on the day.
Lau finally broke through with her first birdie of the regional on the par-5 13th hole. After reaching the 463-yard hole in two, she need just two putts to post her first red number of the tournament. Adding in her 11 pars, she finished with a nine-over total of 153, putting her in a tie for 58th.
Lau, one of six individuals invited to the regional, will start her second round off the 10th hole again at 8:55 a.m. She will be paired with Notre Dame's Emma Albrecht (77-74/151) and East Tennessee State's Hee Ying Loy (75-78/153). The top-six finishing schools and the top three individuals of a non-qualifying team will advance the NCAA Finals from May 17-22 at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
