ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior outfielder Jordan Brewer of the University of Michigan baseball program was selected in the third round of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday afternoon (June 4), going to the Houston Astros with the 106th overall pick.
He joins U-M junior pitchers Tommy Henry (74th pick, Arizona Diamondbacks) and Karl Kauffmann (77th pick, Colorado Rockies), who were selected in Competitive Balance Round B on Monday (June 3). Michigan has had at least one player taken in the MLB Draft in each of the last seven years under head coach Erik Bakich.
Brewer, who was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year in his first season with the Wolverines, boasts a .349 batting average with 12 home runs and a .612 slugging percentage. The outfielder from St. Joseph, Michigan, has totaled 54 runs batted in through 54 games played and leads Michigan with 24 multi-hit games. Brewer has missed a majority of the Wolverines' postseason run with an injury, but he reappeared Sunday (June 2) against Creighton and started in the NCAA Regional championship game Monday night (June 3), when he went 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored.
Brewer transferred to Michigan after playing two seasons at Lincoln Trail Community College in Robinson, Illinois. Prior to the draft, Brewer was named the No. 108 overall prospect by MLB.com.
Michigan (44-19) is in the midst a strong postseason run after going 3-1 in the Corvallis Regional last weekend to advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time since 2007 and second time overall. The Wolverines are seeking their eighth trip to the College World Series and their third national title.
The draft continues Tuesday through round 10, and rounds 11-40 will take place Wednesday (June 5) starting at noon. MLB.com will provide live coverage both days.
