ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Paige Jones recorded six aces to help propel the No. 15-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-12, 25-16) against Tennessee Tech on Saturday (Aug. 31) at Cliff Keen Arena. The win wrapped up a 3-0 weekend for U-M at the Michigan Invitational.
Michigan totaled 12 service aces in the contest, as Jones accounted for half of them and came up just one ace short of a career high. Freshman Jess Robinson totaled three in her first time at the service line this season, while senior Kyleigh Hamacher had two and senior Sydney Wetterstrom chipped in one.
On top of the serving prowess of Jones, the Wolverine offense was led by Wetterstrom, who finished with eight kills on the day, while Robinson, Jones and senior Katarina Glavinic each tallied seven kills. U-M got nine digs from junior Natalie Smith to lead the Maize and Blue defensively, with the Wolverines also recording five blocks.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair before Tennessee Tech took a 20-18 lead after a 6-1 run. U-M answered with a 7-1 run and won the final six points of the set in a 25-21 win. The Wolverines earned a set one victory, 25-21, thanks to a strong performance on the attacking end. U-M was balanced offensively in the first set, as four Wolverines each totaled three kills in the frame.
Michigan never trailed in the second set, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the match behind a 25-12 victory. Jones got hot from behind the line, recording three straight service aces and a total of five in the set.
The Wolverines also did not trail in the third set but found themselves tied at 12 with the Golden Eagles. A kill from freshman May Pertofsky sparked a four-point spurt for Michigan, which propelled it to a 25-16 win. Michigan's final five points of the match came courtesy of three Wetterstrom kills sandwiched between a pair of service aces for Robinson.
Michigan hits the road for the first time next weekend, heading to Dayton, Ohio, for the Dayton Invitational. First up for the Wolverines on Friday (Sept. 6) will be Missouri at 10 a.m.
