DAYTON, Ohio -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team dropped its first match of the season, as it fell to Missouri in three sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-23) Friday (Sept. 6) in the opening match of the Dayton Invitational at the Frericks Center.
Freshman May Pertofsky finished with eight kills on a .583 hitting percentage to lead the U-M offense. Freshman Jess Robinson and senior Sydney Wetterstrom each chipped in six kills, as senior MacKenzi Welsh handed out 20 assists. Missouri was hot offensively, hitting .507 for the match and totaling 10 service aces.
Michigan fell behind early in the first set and could never catch up, dropping the first, 25-12. The Tigers had just one attack error in the set, hit .591 and recorded six service aces.
The second set was much of the same as Missouri stayed hot on the attack. The Tigers hit .600 in the second, scoring the first point and leading throughout in a 25-13 win.
U-M dug an early hole in the third set but hung around long enough to make a run. With Missouri holding a 14-10 lead, the Tiger setter sent a ball too far to the outside to result in an error and put Jones back to the service line. Michigan ripped off seven straight points on Jones' serve, including a pair of aces from the sophomore.
Missouri took a timeout as it faced an 18-14 deficit and answered with three straight points. The teams went back and forth from there, eventually tying the set at 21. Missouri scored the next two for a 23-22 lead before Jones answered with a kill to the back corner. The Tigers won the next point for a pair of match points, converting on the second to seal the 3-0 win.
Michigan will be back in action later today at the Dayton Invitational against Northern Illinois at 5 p.m.
