OMAHA, Neb. -- Despite lofty margins in both shots (25-9) and shots on goal (9-2), the University of Michigan men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 (2OT) draw with Omaha on Friday (Sept. 13) at Caniglia Field. The Wolverines conceded early, but scrapped back to earn the draw on an equalizing goal in the 75th minute from sophomore Derick Broche.
The Wolverines fell behind in the ninth minute. Aaron Uribe put the home side in front, 1-0, when he headed a cross from Diego Gutierrez over the leaping effort of senior goalkeeper Andrew Verdi.
The visitors were resilient, though, dominating Omaha the rest of the half. In the 18th minute, senior Jack Hallahan took the ball to the touchline, cut inside and tried roofing a shot on Omaha goalkeeper Jeremy Pollard, but his attempt was palmed high over the bar.
Michigan spent much of the first half in Omaha's end of the field. In the 42nd minute, junior Jackson Ragen got a free look off a corner kick, but his header sailed high. Hallahan had two chances in the final moments; he pushed a left-footed attempt just wide of the frame before he rang a shot off the right post with nine seconds to play.
The Wolverines continued to press in the second half and Hallahan was right in the center of it. In the 58th minute, some fancy footwork from the Englishman created some space on the right flank. He sent a cross in to graduate student Nebojsa Popovic, but the ensuing shot went wide.
Popovic was taken down inside the box in the 60th minute, which earned Michigan a penalty-kick chance. Junior Marc Ybarra stepped up to take it, but missed.
After many near-misses, U-M finally got level in the 75th minute on a goal from Broche. Hallahan crossed a beautiful ball in on the far side, and Broche raced to the near post to get a head on it, his diving attempt skirting past Pollard to knot the score at 1-1.
Ninety minutes wasn't enough, and the match went to overtime. Neither team had any real chances in the first session, but the second was a different story. U-M was all over Omaha and put four shots on frame. In the 103rd minute, Broche found himself on a breakaway and attempted to center the ball to a wide-open Popovic, but the cross was just out of his reach.
Junior Umar Farouk Osman nearly ended it twice. In the 103rd minute, with his initial shot blocked and Pollard off his line, he fired his second attempt, but it was cleared off the line by a UNO defender. With the Mavericks reeling, junior Austin Swiech came into the attack in the 104th minute and tried chipping Pollard at the back post. The goalkeeper got a touch on it and it fell to a wide-open Osman at the back post, but his follow-up shot missed the frame.
Verdi played all 110 minutes in net, making one save.
The Wolverines will return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 17), when they host Oakland at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
