ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Miranda Tucker, sophomore Maggie MacNeil and freshman Kaitlynn Sims each won two events to propel the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team to season-opening wins over Miami University, 229-71, and Navy, 190-110, on Friday (Sept. 20) at Canham Natatorium.
Only three weeks into training, the Wolverines looked sharp in the sprint and distance freestyles. Sims, a highly-touted freshman from Texas, looked right at home in her first collegiate meet at Canham Natatorium with wins in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.50) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:53.49). Junior Sierra Schmidt (4:56.20/9:55.88) and freshman Octavia Lau (4:57.75/10:11.33) were second and third, respectively, in both events.
MacNeil returned to racing for the first time since her medal-winning performances at this summer's World Championships, a she earned wins the 100-yard backstroke (53.50) and 100-yard freestyle (50.20).
Junior Daria Pyshnenko showed some early-season speed as she claimed a win in the 50-yard freestyle by nearly a second (22.85). She also was second to MacNeil in the 100-yard freestyle (50.20).
Tucker began her final season on a high note, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.52) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.61). In the latter race, she was second at the halfway point, but charged back and ended up winning by nearly two seconds.
The Wolverines dominated on the diving boards, putting up 1-2-3-4 sweeps on the one- and three-meter springboards. Junior Camryn McPherson won one-meter (285.10), while sophomore Allie Klein won three-meter (331.65). Both divers also had second-place finishes -- McPherson on three-meter and Klein on one-meter. Juniors Nikki Canale and Christy Cutshaw were third and fourth, respectively, on both boards.
Michigan also took both relays. The team of MacNeil, Tucker, junior Alexis Margett and Pyshnenko won the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.80), while the team of Tucker, MacNeil, senior Vanessa Krause and Pyshnenko combined on the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.36).
