DAYTON, Ohio -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team fought back to force a fifth set and closed within a point at 13-12 in the final stanza but dropped a 3-2 decision (28-26, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13) to host Dayton on Saturday evening (Sept. 7) at the Dayton Invitational inside Frericks Center.
Michigan opened up a 4-2 lead in the fifth set before Dayton responded with a 9-0 run. Michigan used both timeouts in the final frame to try to stop the spurt, but the Flyers grabbed an 11-4 lead. U-M slowly climbed back into as it won six of the next seven points to close the lead to 12-10.
A kill from fifth-year senior Cori Crocker brought Michigan within a point at 13-12, but the Wolverines got no closer as Dayton closed out a 15-12 fifth-set victory.
Michigan had three players with double-figure kills in sophomore Paige Jones (16), freshman May Pertofsky (14) and senior Sydney Wetterstrom. (12). Pertofsky added seven blocks on the evening as Michigan totaled 13 in the match. On defense, junior Natalie Smith (22) and senior Kyleigh Hamacher (16) set new career highs in digs, with senior MacKenzi Welsh handing out 51 assists with nine assists.
Dayton took the early lead behind a first-set win after it stormed back to grab a 28-26 win. Michigan had three set points in the first but could not cash in as Dayton won the final two points to wrap up the set. Michigan registered a .333 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set loss.
Michigan responded to pick up a 25-23 victory in set two and evened the match at one set apiece. The Wolverines grabbed control of the set lead early on at 4-3 and never looked back. Michigan led by as many as eight points at 15-7 before it finished off the set, totaling 15 kills in the process.
The Wolverines dropped another close one in the third set, 25-23. Dayton grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that featured 10 ties before the Flyers took over in the second half of the stanza.
Trailing 7-6 in the fourth set, Michigan ripped off six straight points to grab a 12-7 lead and take control. The Maize and Blue lead never dropped below three the rest of the way, as it won the fourth (25-19) to force the deciding set.
Michigan will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 13), when it hostis Navy at Crisler Center at 7:30 p.m.
