ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Raleigh Loughman netted her second career game-winner late in the second half to lead the University of Michigan women's soccer team to 2-0 Senior Day shutout over Bowling Green on Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon at U-M Soccer Stadium. Prior to the game, the Wolverines honored their three seniors, Jada Dayne, Brooke Cilley and Sura Yekka.
The Wolverines notched their third shutout of the season as they did not give up a shot in the game.
Loughman scored her third goal of the season, while sophomore Skylar Anderson netted her first career goal. U-M outshot Bowling Green, 16-0, with Meredith Haakenson adding two shots on net.
Michigan had six opportunities in the first half with its first coming when Sarah Stratigakis put a shot on goal from the top of the 18-yard box. The Wolverines continued to put balls through the gaps, but the Bowling Green keeper was there to scoop it up before Michigan could get off a shot.
Lily Farkas added a shot on net in the closing minutes of the half, but the teams went into the break scoreless.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half and fired two quality shots that would land just inches wide. The match remained scoreless until the 80th minute when Haakenson ripped a shot at the net. The ball bounced off the diving keeper to the foot of Loughman, who collected the ball and lifted it into the top-left corner of the net to put Michigan up, 1-0.
U-M extended its lead two minutes later when Loughman took a free kick outside the 18-yard box to the head of Anderson. The sophomore lunged forward and knocked the ball into the center of the goal on the far side to extend the Michigan advantage to 2-0.
Michigan will travel to the west coast to face Washington State on Friday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. PDT at Lower Soccer Field.
