Wolverine Bites
• Michigan returns to Crisler Center for the fifth time in three seasons -- and has another Crisler dual slated for Feb. 8 vs. No. 1-ranked Iowa -- after not competing in the venue since 2007. The Wolverines claimed both of their Crisler duals last season, defeating Lehigh, 21-13, and No. 19 Illinois, 28-10. U-M also established its program's home attendance record at Crisler two seasons ago, drawing 8,303 against rival Ohio State.
• Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris remains unbeaten on the season with a 17-0 record, including eight wins over nationally-ranked opponents and 10 bonus wins -- with five pins -- and is ranked No. 2 in the national polls. Parris defeated Arizona State's sixth-ranked Tanner Hall, 6-3, in the finals at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 6-7) with two takedowns and 1:03 riding-time advantage. He also owns three wins over Central Michigan's now-fifth-ranked Matt Stencel, including 9-2 and 4-0 decisions in the finals at the MSU Open (Nov. 2) and Black Knight Invite (Nov. 17).
• Sunday's dual meet is expected to feature the nation's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked wrestlers at heavyweight with Parris and Minnesota's Gable Steveson. Steveson moved into the top spot this week following a season-ending injury to Penn State's Anthony Cassar, who handed Steveson his only two losses last season -- in the Big Ten final and NCAA semifinals. Steveson, like Parris, is undefeated on the year with a 6-0 record and, also like Parris, is a former junior world freestyle champion.
• Sophomore/freshman Joey Silva made his season and varsity debut against Michigan State last Friday (Jan. 10), using three takedowns and 2:19 riding-time advantage to beat Garrett Pepple, 7-2, at 133 pounds. Pepple was ranked as high as No. 25 by FloWrestling. Silva posted a 7-1 record in his redshirt season last year, earning a tournament win at the Cleveland State Open in his first collegiate competition. The MSU dual was his first action in a little more than a year. He made his first-ever appearance in the national rankings this week following the win, listing No. 20 by The Open Mat.
• Senior/junior Kanen Storr also made his season dual-meet debut in U-M's win over Michigan State, using a third-period takedown to defeat Alex Hrisopoulos, 4-1, at 149 pounds. Storr, who is 7-2 and ranked as high as No. 9 nationally, came out of his Olympic redshirt at the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), where he took seventh place with Big Ten wins over Purdue's Nate Limmex (8-1) and Wisconsin's Cole Martin (6-3). Storr is up a weight class this season; he was an NCAA qualifier last year at 141 pounds.
• Freshman Cole Mattin also came out of redshirt last semester, earning a dramatic 11-8 comeback win against Central Michigan's Dresden Simon at 141 pounds in his varsity debut -- in which he overcame essentially a five-point deficit -- 5-1 plus riding time -- with a feet-to-back single leg for six points midway through the third period. He is 2-1 in dual meets and was one match shy of placing at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
• Junior/sophomore Jack Medley owns a 3-1 dual record at 125 pounds with three major decision victories -- and a one-point loss (3-2) to Central Michigan's ninth-ranked Drew Hildebrandt. Medley owns two wins over ranked opponents this season, defeating North Carolina's 19th-ranked Joey Melendez, 10-2, in the dual opener and North Carolina State's 15th-ranked Jakob Camacho, 6-5, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Medley also boasts a pair of wins against three-time NCAA qualifier Christian Moody of Oklahoma, including a 9-4 decision at the CKLV.
• In addition to Silva and Cole Mattin, six other Wolverines have made their collegiate dual-meet debuts this season -- senior/junior Ben Freeman (141 pounds), sophomore/freshman Nick Freeman (149), sophomore/freshman Will Lewan (157), senior/junior Tyler Meisinger (165), sophomore/freshman Max Maylor (174) and sophomore/freshman Bobby Striggow (184).
• Three Wolverines are currently taking Olympic redshirts for the 2019-20 season -- fifth-year seniors Myles Amine and Logan Massa and graduate student Stevan Micic. Micic and Amine have already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after placing fifth at 57kg/125 pounds and 86kg/189 pounds, respectively, at the UWW World Championships in September. Massa qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials with his first-place finish at the Senior Nationals in December. None of the three are enrolled in classes this semester and will retain the year of NCAA eligibility through the athletics activity waiver.

Last Time Out
The Wolverines started strong, winning each of the first five matches, and ended with a bang -- a 29-second pin in the final bout -- to defeat in-state rival Michigan State, 22-14, in its Big Ten opener last Friday (Jan. 10) at Keen Arena. Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris picked up the fall -- his fifth of the season -- to put the exclamation point on the dual win. Sophomore/freshman Joey Silva and senior/junior Kanen Storr won in their season dual debuts at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively. It was Silva's varsity and season debut; he used three takedowns to defeat Garrett Pepple, 7-2. [ Full Recap ]
