ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In front of a live national television audience on Big Ten Network, the University of Michigan women's track and field team will host traditional rivals Michigan State and Ohio State for the Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18).
The scored triangular meet -- the only such regular-season meet for all three teams this year -- will pit the Wolverines, Spartans and Buckeyes against one another inside the confines of the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building starting at 10:15 a.m.
Live coverage of the competition on Big Ten Network will begin at 11 a.m., and will run through the conclusion of the meet at 2:30 p.m.
Fans who attend the meet in person are encouraged to wear their maize-colored clothing to participate in U-M's first-ever track and field "Maize Out." The first 300 fans also will receive a free maize T-shirt to mark the occasion.
The competition will be the second of the Wolverines' young 2020 indoor campaign, as they aim to build on the successes of their opener last Saturday and get their first taste of Big Ten opposition.
Among those expected to compete are 800-meter national leader and Big Ten Athlete of the Week Meg Darmofal, All-Americans Chloe Foster, Alice Hill and Ericka VanderLende, the school-record-breaking weight throw duo of Courtney Jacobsen and Briana Nelson, and Wolverine Invitational event winners Katt Miner and Amanda Schaare.
Those women will lead the Wolverines' efforts to top MSU and OSU atop the team scoring leaderboard at meet's end.
In each of the 15 individual and relay events contested throughout the meet, student-athletes will earn points for their teams corresponding to their finishing place. Individual event winners will get seven points for their teams, with second place receiving five, third earning four, fourth receiving three, fifth earning two and sixth receiving one.
Only two entries per team are eligible to score in each individual event. Each teams' third-place-and-lower finishers will not score, and their points will be deferred to the next eligible finisher from either Michigan State or Ohio State.
In the 4x400 relay, only one squad from each school will score, with the fastest school earning seven points, the second-fastest school getting five points and the third-fastest receiving four.
The meet can be followed by way of live results from Delta Timing and updates from the official Michigan Track and Field social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram.
Team Outlook and Notes
• The Wolverines, led by head coaches James Henry and Jerry Clayton, entered the season ranked No. 82 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason National Track and Field Rating Index (TFRI).
• The Wolverines finished ninth at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships, scoring 51.5 points. All but 10 of those points return in 2020, led by reigning indoor 600-meter champion Aurora Rynda. Joining her are five other women who finished top-eight at last year's Big Ten meet, with more on the roster who have the potential to join them. In Rynda, Chloe Foster and Alice Hill, Michigan also returns three of four legs from the fastest distance medley relay team in Big Ten history, and all four DMR members return from the sixth-place NCAA Championships team including Meg Darmofal.
• Returning All-Americans: the quartet of Hill, Foster, Rynda and Darmofal (distance medley relay); Camille Davre and Ericka VanderLende (cross country)
• Returning Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers: Darmofal (mile); Micaela DeGenero (800 meters); Foster (600 meters); Hill (mile); Mercier (pole vault); Rynda (600 meters champion)
• Current school record-holders: Hill, Foster and Rynda (distance medley relay); Foster, Jade Harrison and Julia Hall (indoor 4x400 relay)
• Darmofal kicked off her 2020 campaign with a career-best 2:08.24 run over 800 meters that earned her the top spot on the NCAA leaderboard and her first Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week honors.
• Courtney Jacobsen and Briana Nelson combined for the best-ever weight throw competition in school history in last weekend's Wolverine Invitational, breaking the school record in the event four times between the two of them. Jacobsen emerged with the record at 20.15m (66 feet, 1.5 inches), with Nelson briefly holding the record at 19.95m (65-5.5). The record fell twice to Jacobsen on back-to-back throws in the first two rounds, with Nelson overtaking the all-time mark on the very next throw after her teammate's second attempt. They rank 19th and 20th nationally.
• High jumper Katt Miner had not only her best-ever season debut on Saturday, but also the best outing of her entire collegiate career. She claimed the high jump title with a third-attempt clearance at 1.80m (5-10.75), moving her to a tie for No. 4 nationally and No. 8 in school history.
• Shot putter Amanda Schaare needed just one throw to establish herself as the school's best freshman in the event and at No. 6 on the all-time list overall in U-M history. Her opening throw of 15.22m (49-11.25) made her the only first-year competitor all-time at Michigan to exceed 15 meters in the event, and it moved her to No. 36 nationally.
• VanderLende was strong in her Michigan track debut, clocking a 4:49.97 mile that placed her second at the Wolverine Invitational and ranks her seventh nationally.
