Michigan Suffers Road Setback at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Eli Brooks scored a career-high 25 points and Franz Wagner added 18, but the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball fell, 90-83, at Iowa on Friday night (Jan. 17) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Brooks tied a career best with five three-pointers, while Wagner's point total included a pair of triples.
Senior Jon Teske added 14 points, while dishing out a career-best and team-high seven assists and also collecting a career-high four steals. Sophomore David DeJulius rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Wolverines with 10 points, eight of which came in the first half.
Michigan shot 50 percent from the floor and made 11 three-pointers. The Wolverines blocked five Iowa shots, with Teske and Brandon Johns Jr. each rejecting two.
With his six assists on the evening, senior Zavier Simpson moved into second on Michigan's all-time assists list with 579. Simpson surpassed Rumeal Robinson, who had 575 career assists.
The Wolverines took an early 11-4 lead as they kept Iowa off the scoreboard from more than two minutes, but the Hawkeyes used an 18-2 run to take a 27-18 advantage and forced a U-M timeout with 9:07 left in the first half.
Brooks came up big for the Maize and Blue, scoring six straight points before assisting on a Wagner three-pointer to bring Michigan within six, 35-29, with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half.
Michigan continued to work its way out of the deficit, scoring five points in the final minute to head into the locker room trailing, 47-43, at halftime.
Brooks led the Wolverines in the first half with 14 points, while DeJulius added eight points off the bench. Teske scored seven points and dished out a career-best six assists in the opening frame.
Michigan kept itself within three of Iowa following a Simpson three-pointer before the U-M bench was issued a technical foul which led to three Hawkeye made free throws Luka Garza was fouled on the shot prior to the technical foul.
Brooks hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Wolverines before Teske threaded a pass to Wagner on a left-handed drive to give Michigan a 62-61 lead with just under 13 minutes to play. Brooks' fourth triple of the game was the start of an 11-2 Wolverine run that led to a 66-63 advantage and an Iowa timeout.
After the timeout, Wagner hit his second three of the night before Brooks sank his fifth three-pointer to deliver Michigan a 72-68 advantage into the media break.
Iowa went on scoring runs of 8-0 and 7-0 over the remaining seven minutes to finish off the win.
Michigan will return to action Wednesday night (Jan. 22) when it hosts Penn State at Crisler Center. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
