ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team continued action at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan went 2-2 on the doubles court, getting one win against Ohio State and one win against Tennessee.
Junior Bella Lorenzini and freshman Nicole Hammond accounted for Michigan's win over Ohio State, with the Wolverine pair teaming up for a 6-4 win over Danielle Wolf and Mary Beth Hurley. U-M went up a break at 4-2 and held a 5-3 advantage after a pair of holds. Michigan was broken when serving for the match, giving OSU a chance to tie it at 5-5. Lorenzini and Hammond came right back with a break of their own, winning the match on a double fault.
Senior Lera Patiuk and sophomore Anca Craciun teamed up for Michigan's other doubles win, dispatching of Tennessee's Hadley Doyle and Rebeka Mertena, 6-0.
Craciun picked up her first win of the weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ohio State's Kathleen Jones. Craciun took control early in both sets, breaking quickly to record the victory.
Junior Alyvia Jones grabbed her second win of the weekend, knocking off No. 72-ranked Kaitlin Staines of Tennessee in straight sets. Following a 7-5 win in the first set, it was all Jones in the second as she controlled the set throughout in a 6-1 win.
Senior Giulia Pairone picked up her first victory of the tournament, winning a 6-4, 6-3 match over UT's Carly Briggs. Pairone took advantage of a late break in the first set and carried that momentum over into the second set. The Wolverine senior went back to serve out the match at 5-2 but was broken on the deuce point. She came through in the ensuing game, breaking Briggs for the match.
Lommer ended the day with a victory for Michigan, coming back for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) win over Tennessee's Tenika McGiffin. Lorenzini fell in an early hole in the first set before mounting a comeback that fell just short. Lorenzini jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, but McGiffin won the next three games to tie the set at 4-4. The Wolverine won the final two games, breaking McGiffin on the deuce point to send it to a 10-point tiebreaker for the match. It was back-and-forth until Lorenzini won two straight points to break a 6-6 tie for an 8-6 lead, which was all the space she needed to wrap up a 10-7 win.
Michigan will conclude tourney action tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 19) with the third day of the Michigan Invitational. U-M will begin doubles play at noon, with singles to follow.
