LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team surged late but were doomed by bonus points and could not overcome a sizable intermission deficit in a 25-15 loss at No. 4 Nebraska on Friday night (Feb. 14) at the Cornhuskers' Devaney Center. The Wolverines claimed four individual bouts, including three of the final five.
Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second nationally, earned his third straight pin -- and 10th of the season -- with an arm bar at the 2:01 mark against David Jensen. Parris struck early on a single-leg takedown and accumulated more than a minute of riding time before the fall. With the win, Parris avenged a loss to Jensen at last season's Big Ten Tournament. He improved to 24-0 on the season and owns six falls in Big Ten dual competition.
Junior/sophomore Jack Medley, ranked 19th nationally, followed with a 6-1 decision win against Alex Thomsen to cut the Huskers' dual lead to 15-12. After a scoreless first period, Medley took his first lead with a late second-period single leg and rideout and did it again in the third, finishing on a head in the hole midway through the frame and riding out the bout to accumulate 1:46 in time advantage.
Nebraska clinched the dual with back-to-back bonus wins at 133 and 141 pounds, before senior/junior Kanen Storr closed out the night with an 8-5 comeback win against 16th-ranked Colin Purinton in the final bout. Storr, ranked 10th, gave up the first points on a single-leg takedown but responded with one of his own late in the first and rode out the period. He added two more takedowns -- one apiece in the second and third to improve to 7-1 in dual competition.
Sophomore/freshman Will Lewan, ranked ninth at 157 pounds, also rallied in the dual's opening bout to give the Wolverines an early lead with a 4-3 decision against 19th-ranked Peyton Robb. Lewan trailed for the bulk of the match after a hard snap down and go-behind takedown for Nebraska midway through the first period. He could not convert on a deep single-leg attack in the second but made good on a similar attempt late in the third, earning the deciding points after a couple adjustments with just 15 seconds remaining in the bout. It was Lewan's fourth win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Wolverines will wrap the weekend road swing in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday (Feb. 16), taking on the 12th-ranked Badgers at 3 p.m. CST at UW Field House. The dual will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
