ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey senior Will Lockwood on Thursday (March 19) signed an entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks, the organization announced.
A native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Lockwood was selected by the Canucks in the third round (64th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
"Being a part of the Michigan family is something I will cherish the rest of my life," Lockwood said. "My experience as a Wolverine was everything I dreamt of and more. I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me along the way in making these four years unforgettable. Forever Go Blue!"
As team captain in 2019-20, Lockwood was second on the team in scoring with 23 points, scoring nine goals and 14 assists in 33 games. He collected at least one point in 19 games leading Michigan to a 15-3-1 record when doing so. Lockwood's best offensive output this season was a three-point game in a 4-1 win over Michigan State in the Duel in the D as he tallied two goals and assisted on the game-winning goal.
As the Wolverines started the second half of the season hot, so did Lockwood as he had a five-game point streak from Jan. 10-31. He also was the team leader in plus/minus at +10
"I would like to congratulate Will on signing with the Vancouver Canucks as he pursues his dream of playing in the NHL," Michigan head coach Mel Pearson said. "Vancouver is getting a charter kid who plays with great energy and passion. Thank you Will for giving us four awesome years at Michigan. Go Blue!"
Lockwood finishes his career having played in 115 games and totaling 37 goals and 48 assists for 85 points. As a junior alternative captain, he led the team in goals. His sophomore year was cut short after a season-ending injury at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships. In his first season as a Wolverine, he captured the Hal Downes Trophy as the team's most valuable player.
Lockwood will become the third Wolverine in the Vancouver organization, joining Quinn Hughes and Tyler Motte.
