MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point to grab the early lead, but No. 16-ranked Pepperdine won the first four singles matches off court to record a 4-1 win over the Wolverines on Saturday (March 7) afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Michigan raced out to the early lead, wrapping up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. U-M's No. 1 duo of junior Alyvia Jones and freshman Andrea Cerdan made quick work of Pepperdine's No. 55-ranked pair of Jessica Failla and Anastasia Iamachkine in a 6-0 shutout.
Pepperdine got a match back with a win at No. 2.
U-M's No. 3 pair of junior Bella Lorenzini and sophomore Anca Craciun clinched the match's first point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3. The Wolverine pair broke early for a 3-1 lead and that was all the space they needed to put Michigan on the board.
Michigan got first-set singles wins from senior Chiara Lommer at No. 2 and Jones at No. 5, with the Waves winning four first sets.
The Waves got on the board to even the score at one point each with a straight-set win at No. 3.
Pepperdine took its first lead of the day a few minutes later with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 for a 2-0 advantage before following with a win at No. 6 for a 3-1 lead.
Senior Giulia Pairone put up a fight against No. 1-ranked Ashley Lahey at the top spot before falling, 6-3, 7-6(3). In the second set, Pairone suffered a late break to fall behind 5-3 before fighting off a match point to get back on serve. The Wolverine won her next two service games to force a breaker before eventually falling, 7-3, to give Pepperdine a 4-1 win.
