ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's gymnastics head coach Bev Plocki was named the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WGCA) Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, while her staff was named the organization's Regional Assistant Coaches of the Year on Thursday (April 9).
Plocki's honor is the 11th in her tenure the Wolverines. She has received the award in each of the last five seasons as well as 1992, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2010 and 2013.
Plocki's staff -- associate head coach Scott Sherman, assistant coach Maile'ana Kanewa-Hermelyn and volunteer assistant coach Quest Hayden -- teamed up for their award. It is the seventh honor for Sherman and first for both Kanewa-Hermelyn and Hayden.
The coaching staff helped lead Michigan to one of its best seasons in program history with a 12-1 record and a National Qualifying Score of 197.900 prior to the regular season and postseason being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 Wolverines won the Big Ten regular-season title with an undefeated 9-0 conference record. Michigan posted the top two scores in program history with a 197.950 at the Elevate the Stage meet in Toledo, Ohio, and a 197.900 at home against New Hampshire.
On March 12, the Big Ten Conference canceled the remainder of the winter and spring sports seasons due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The NCAA canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships.
