The University of Michigan men's and women's swimming and diving teams officially open the 2020-21 season this Saturday (Jan. 16), facing Indiana and Northwestern in a double-dual meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. Diving will begin at 8:30 a.m. with swimming to follow at noon. The meet will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.

Team Notes
• This weekend's competition is the team's first since the Big Ten Championships last February. Since returning to campus for the fall semester, the program has found creative ways to continue training. [ Fall Updates: October | November | U.S. Open | December ]
• This year marks the 100th year of varsity competition for the men's swimming and diving program, which began in 1921. It is the 47th year of varsity competition for the women's swimming and diving program.
• Michigan is ranked No. 7 (men) and No. 9 (women) in the latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 Coaches Poll, released in December. The Indiana men's team is ranked No. 9, while its women's team holds a No. 20 ranking. The Northwestern women's team is ranked No.24, while the men's squad is unranked. [ Poll ]
• Twelve swimmers return who had qualified for last season's NCAA Championships -- six on each team. For the women, returning qualifiers include seniors Daria Pyshnenko and Sierra Schmidt; juniors Olivia Carter, Maggie MacNeil and Victoria Kwan; and sophomore Kaitlynn Sims. For the men, the returners are seniors Luiz Gustavo Borges, Will Roberts and Ricardo Vargas; juniors Patrick Callan and Will Chan; and sophomore Danny Berlitz.
• Several members of the 2020-21 squad were named to the U.S National or Junior National teams. National team members include senior Sierra Schmidt and freshman Jake Mitchell (along with alums Gabby DeLoof, Miles Smachlo and Charlie Swanson), while members of the Junior National Team include sophomore Kaitlynn Sims, freshman Wyatt Davis and Class of 2021 signee Lindsay Flynn (Matthews, N.C.).
• This weekend could mark the official competition debuts of some of the 18 freshmen on the team's 2020-21 roster. The newcomers include Kathryn Ackerman, Juan Ceresa, Casey Chung, Wyatt Davis, Claire Donan, Kalli Fama, Ansel Froass, Sophie Housey, Noelle Kaufmann, James LeBuke, Jake Mitchell, Charlie Morici, Claire Newman, Taylor Peters, Bence Szabados, Sophia Tuinman, Yugo Tsukikawa and Claire Tuttle.

Indiana

• Diving Coach: Drew Johansen
Men: The Hoosiers went 8-3 in dual meets last year and finished third at the Big Ten Championships. Top returners include Brendan Burns (2020 Big Ten Freshman of the Year), Bruno Blaskovic (2020 Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships) and the duo of distance swimmer Michael Brinegar and diver Andrew Capobianco, both of whom are back after taking Olympic redshirt years.
Series: Michigan leads, 46-33-3, in the all-time series with Indiana. The two teams split a pair of meets last year: Indiana won, 165-135, on Nov. 2, while Michigan won, 160-140, on Jan. 11.
Women: The Hoosiers went 4-5 in dual meets last year and finished third at the Big Ten Championships. Top returners include Noelle Peplowski (a two-time All-American), Emily Weiss (2020-21 U.S. Junior National Team) and Mackenzie Looze (All-American).
Series: Michigan leads, 24-12, in the all-time series against Indiana. The two teams met last year in Ann Arbor, a 186-114 win for Michigan.
Northwestern

• Diving Coach: Kris Jorgensen
Men: The Wildcats went 8-5 last season and finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships. Top returners include Federico Burdisso (butterfly), Kevin Houseman (breaststroke) and Manuel Martos Bacarizo (backstroke).
Series: Michigan leads, 43-4, in the all-time series versus Northwestern.
Women: The Wildcats went 12-3 last season and finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships. Top returners include Sophie Angus (breaststroke), Hannah Brunzell (breaststroke), Markie Hopkins (diving) and Calypso Sheridan (IM).
Series: Michigan leads, 26-6, in the all-time series with Northwestern.
