Michigan Sweeps Event Titles to Defeat OSU in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team captured all four event titles to defeat No. 19 Ohio State, 197.225-196.000, in its season-opening meet Saturday (Jan. 16) at Crisler Center.
The Wolverines score of 197.225 is the highest season-opening score in the history of the program and the second-highest score in a season-opener in Big Ten history. Michigan's 197.225 is second only to Nebraska's 197.375 to open the 2012 season.
Junior Natalie Wojcik led the Wolverines (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten), winning two event titles -- tied with sophomore Sierra Brooks on the uneven bars (9.925) and junior Maddie Mariani on the balance beam (9.900) -- and the all-around with a score of 39.575.
Brooks earned a second event title with her 9.925 on vault, while Mariani's 9.900 on beam tied her career best. Gabby Wilson won the floor exercise, tying a career-best 9.950.
Junior Abby Brenner earned a pair of top-three finishes, placing second on the vault with a 9.875 and finishing third on the uneven bars with a 9.900.
Finally, freshmen Reyna Guggino (floor) and Naomi Morrison (vault) made their Michigan debuts.
The Wolverines had a solid start on the vault, scoring a 49.300 behind Brooks and a second-place finish from Brenner. Wojcik rounded out the top three performances with a 9.850.
Moving to the uneven bars, Brooks and Wojcik shared the top spot. For the second straight event, U-M finished with the top three scorers with Brenner finishing third with a 9.900. Michigan finished bars with a score of 49.400.
The Wolverines continued to pull ahead of the Buckeyes with a 49.075 on beam with a three-way tie for first place between Mariani, Wojcik and OSU's Hannah Oliveros scoring a 9.900.
The Wolverines swept the final event of the day, floor exercise. Wilson put together a 9.950, followed by matching 9.900s from Brooks and Wojcik. U-M tallied a 49.450 in the final rotation to seal the win over Ohio State (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten).
Michigan will be back in action Friday (Jan. 22) when it welcomes Minnesota to Crisler Center for a 5:30 p.m. meet.
