Wolverines Sweep Flames in Season-Opening Virtual Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Paul Juda won four event titles and the all-around and led the third-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team to a 409.000-328.100 season-opening win over Illinois-Chicago on Sunday (Jan. 17) at Newt Loken Training Center. The matchup was contested virtually and is one of the first of its kind in NCAA history.
U-M led wire-to-wire, and swept all seven individual events in the victory.
Juda won five individual titles against the Flames: floor exercise, vault, parallel bars, high bar and the all-around competition. Senior Cameron Bock took two titles, pommel horse and still rings.
Michigan (1-0) began the 2021 season on floor exercise and swept the event with a team score of 68.350. Juda took the event win with a 14.300, while senior Nick Guy (14.150) and sophomore Adam Wooten (13.400) rounded out the top three.
On pommel horse in the second rotation, U-M added to its lead with a 66.750 on the apparatus. Bock took the event win with a 14.400, followed by Juda in second with a 14.350. Fifth-year senior Justin Murphy placed third with a 12.900. After two events, U-M held a commanding 135.100-103.499 advantage.
Still rings was the third rotation, and Bock won it -- and his second event title -- to lead the way for the Wolverines, who totaled a 67.700. Bock bested Juda who scored a 14.100, while graduate student Thomas Paul placed third with a 13.600.
In the fourth rotation on vault, Juda led the Wolverines with a 14.460 on the table. Guy marked his second runner-up finish of the day, scoring a 14.600. Sophomore Casey Cummings and Bock tied for third with scores of 13.550. U-M led the meet, 272.700-217.700, heading into parallel bars.
On parallel bars in the fifth rotation, U-M scored a 67.850. Juda led the Wolverine contingent with a 14.700, with Bock taking second with a 14.200. Freshman Steven Lukasik took third with a 13.150. Going into the final rotation, U-M led the Flames, 340.550-271.400.
Michigan sealed the win on high bar, with the Wolverines scoring a 67.750. Juda scored a 14.450, with Paul placing second with a 13.600, while Lukasik earned a second third-place finish of the day with a 13.450.
In addition to Lukasik, freshman Evgeny Siminiuc also made his U-M debut, scoring a 12.800 on rings.
The virtual meet served as U-M's sole non-conference matchup of the season. The Wolverines will hit the road for their second meet, a 12:30 p.m. CST matchup next Sunday (Jan. 24) with No. 4-ranked Nebraska in Lincoln.
