WILMETTE, Ill. -- Senior Ashley Lau and junior Hailey Borja each tied for 14th individually to guide the University of Michigan women's golf team to a 909 54-hole total Tuesday (Oct. 5) and a seventh-place tie at Northwestern's Windy City Classic at Westmoreland Country Club.
"The Westmoreland Country Club is such a great test of golf, and exposes any weakness," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "It was the perfect course, and field, to test ourselves midway through our fall season. Our final round was our best, and that was because we eliminated most of the big numbers and gained some valuable course knowledge. We will attack the areas of our game that got exposed in the next week and a half to get ready for our final two tournaments."
Heading to Chicago, U-M played its second event in one of the strongest fall event fields of 2021 with nine of the 15 teams ranked among the top 25. Playing alongside No. 5 Stanford and No. 21 Virginia, the 18th-ranked Wolverines posted a 304 team total to position themselves seventh in Monday's opening round. Before the day's second 18 was suspended due to darkness, U-M was one of six teams to finish, tallying a 305 and remained in seventh after the first 36 holes became official.
Heading into the final round, the Wolverines were able to rally with their lowest team total of the event at 300 paced by an even-par 72 from sophomore Monet Chun and a pair of 74s (+2) from Lau and Borja. With a 909 total, U-M closed tied for seventh with host Northwestern.
With their closing 74s, Lau (75-75-74) and Borja (76-74-74) paced the Wolverines tying for 14th with 224 totals. Using two birdies to erase two bogeys in her final round, Chun carded a 72 to help her jump 19 spots to tie for 27th with a 227 (79-76-72) finish. Junior Mikaela Schulz tied for 61st (236) and senior Sophia Trombetta finished 71st (243), rounding out the Wolverines starting five finishes.
After 2020's event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wolverines return to Chapel Hill, N.C., for its fifth straight fall trip to North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, Friday through Sunday (Oct. 15-17). The three-day, 54-hole event will be played on campus at the Finley Golf Course.
