DALLAS, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team began the 2021-22 season with a stout showing on the first night of the SMU Classic on Friday (Oct. 8) at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center. The Wolverines (174 points) lead Louisville (172) by just two points points heading into the final day of competition.
The Wolverines kicked off the meet with a first-place performance in the 400-yard medley relay, as the team of Casey Chung, Letitia Sim, Maggie MacNeil and Lindsay Flynn touched the wall in 3:30.48 to cruise to a three-second victory over Louisville.
Michigan finished with four individual wins, with MacNeil leading the way with two victories. The London, Ontario, native won the 50-yard freestyle by setting a meet record with a 21.78-second finish, then turned in an impressive 51.09 to take the 100-yard backstroke. Kathryn Ackerman took first in the 400-yard IM, finishing a whopping six seconds ahead of second place. Sim won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.09.
The Maize and Blue earned two second-place finishes as well, with Megan Glass touching the wall in 1:46.78 in the 200-yard freestyle. The 800 freestyle relay team of Glass, Ackerman, Victoria Kwan and Sims finished in 7:09.27.
On the diving side, Allie Klein scored a 271.95 to finish second.
The Wolverines will return to the pool Saturday (Oct. 9) for day two of the SMU Classic in Dallas, beginning at 11 a.m. CDT. The meet will be streamed live on SMU's PonyUp TV. Michigan also will host Oakland on Saturday at noon for a dual meet at Canham Natatorium.
