The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team will return to Ann Arbor for its 2021 Gavitt Tipoff Games match up with Seton Hall on Tuesday (Nov. 16) at Crisler Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:07 p.m. on FS1 with Joe Davis (play-by-play) and Bill Raftery (analyst) on the call.
The Seton Hall Pirates
• Seton Hall comes to Ann Arbor after a quick 2-0 start with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson (93-49; Nov. 10) and Yale (80-44; Nov. 14). The Pirates have a base of five graduate players on the roster with four sophomores and three freshmen.
• The Pirates are led by 6-10 junior forward and sixth-man Tyrese Samuel and graduate senior guard Myles Cale, who are both averaging 13.0 points per game. Samuel adds 10.0 rebounds and has five blocks, while Cale is posting 6.5 rebounds and has six steals. In addition to Samuel and Cale, Seton Hall totals four players in double figures with graduate guard Bryce Aiken (12.0 ppg) and graduate forward Alexis Yetna (11.0 ppg).
• Seton Hall has dominated its first two games, scoring 86.5 points per game and adding 50.0 rebounds per game -- including 53 in the win over Yale. Almost 40 percent of the Pirates' offense comes from long range as they are 21-for-48 (43.8%) early on.
• Entering his 12th season at Seton Hall, Kevin Willard has 206 wins with the Pirates, including six 20+ win seasons and four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2016, '17, '18, '19). In 2016, his Pirates captured the Big East Tournament title and shared the regular season title in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games
• Tueday's game will be part of the 2021 Gavitt Tipoff Games, which features contests between the Big Ten and the Big East in an eight game series in mid-November.
• Michigan is 2-1 in the Gavitt Tipoff Games with a 79-71 win over Creighton (Nov. 12, 2019), a 73-46 victory at Villanova (Nov. 14, 2018) and an 86-70 loss to Xavier ( Nov. 19, 2015).
• After starting the Tipoff Games in 2015, the first three set of match ups ended in a 4-4 tie between the two conferences, however, the Big Ten went on to claim the next two by a 5-3 mark (2018, '19). The 2020 series was canceled due to COVID-19.
Remembering 1989
• Tuesday's game will be the third all-time meeting for Michigan against Seton Hall.
• The first meeting came in the 1989 overtime NCAA championship game, where Rumeal Robinson's late free throws sealed U-M's first and only national title with an 80-79 OT win.
• Michigan and Seton Hall entered the 1989 NCAA Tournament both seeded No. 3.
• Michigan's Glen Rice (31 points, 11 rebounds) and Rumeal Robinson (21 points, 11 assists) both notched double-doubles while Seton Hall's John Morton ended the night with 35 points.
• Tied at 71-71, the title game headed to overtime. A foul called on Pirates guard Gerald Greene with 3.0 seconds left sent Rumeal Robinson to the line, who despite making 65.6% of his free-throws on the season, knocked both down to secure the title, as a last second heave from Seton Hall's Daryll Walker bounced off the backboard and rim.
• Steve Fisher was named interim head coach of the Wolverines just prior to tipping off the first round, after Bill Frieder left for Arizona State. With wins over No. 14 Xavier (92-87), No. 11 South Alabama (91-82), No. 2 North Carolina (92-87) and No. 5 Virginia (102-65), U-M claimed the southeast region and advanced to the Final Four.
• In the Final Four, Sean Higgin's last second shot helped U-M upset No. 1 Illinois, 83-81, which set up the title game with Seton Hall, who knocked off No. 2 Duke, 95-78.
• The following fall, a rematch was played at the Duel In the Desert in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. In another game that came down to the wire, the Wolverines pulled away late for a 91-86 victory.
