
Men's Tennis Inks Pair During National Signing Period

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Adam Steinberg announced Thursday (Nov. 18) the signing of Mert Oral and Bjorn Swenson to National Letters of Intent.
A five-star recruit from Ann Arbor, Mich., Oral is the 2021 Mr. Tennis recipient, presented by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association. As a senior he posted a 23-2 record and went 4-0 in his way to the No. 1 singles individual title in Division 3. It marked his third straight No. 1 singles crown and fourth singles title overall after he captured No. 3 singles title as a freshman in Division 4 in 2018. Oral is the ninth high schooler in the state of Michigan to win at least three No. 1 singles titles and just the 11th player ever to win four singles championships. He finished his high school career at Green Hills with a 125-9 record.
A Blue-Chip recruit out of North Oaks, Minnesota, Swenson is ranked No. 11 by Tennis Recruiting, No. 9 on the Dunlop RPI list and No. 13 on the UTR Rating. This past spring, he won his second Class 2A singles championship at Mounds View and finished the season 22-0, while bring ranked No. 1 all year. He won his first title as a freshman in 2019, while the 2020 season was wiped out due to COVID. During the state tournament, his fourth appearance, he did not drop a single set.
The Big Ten East Division co-Champion last spring, the Wolverines begin the spring campaign on Jan. 16 vs. Virginia Tech at the Varsity Tennis Center. This fall, Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider reached the ITA Fall Nationals in doubles. The duo finished the fall campaign with an 8-1 record. Transfer Gavin Young claimed the Big Ten Singles crown, while Jacob Bickersteth and Patrick Maloney finished as runners-up in doubles at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championships.
