ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team and head coach Carol Hutchins announced Thursday (Nov. 18) the Wolverines' 2022 schedule, featuring 50 regular-season contests with 21 home games at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Wolverines' 2022 slate also features 11 opponents who reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including Oklahoma State and Florida State, which both advanced to the 2021 Women's College World Series.
Michigan will kick off the program's 45th year of intercollegiate play at the annual USF Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 11-13 in Tampa, Fla. U-M has opened its season at South Florida every year since 2013, with the exception of last year's conference-only season. Among its five-game slate, Michigan will again face perennial power Florida and host South Florida, both NCAA Tournament teams last season.
Michigan earned an invitation to the St. Peter Clearwater Elite Invitational on Feb. 17-20 in Clearwater, Fla., and will face Oklahoma State, UCF, Florida and LSU. All 40 tournament games will be aired on the ESPN Networks.
The Wolverines will split their spring break with tournament appearances at Duke (Feb. 25-27) and Kentucky (March 3-5), including a pair of games against each host school. It will be the first-ever meeting between Michigan and Duke, which captured the 2021 ACC Tournament title and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in its program's fourth season under Michigan great Marissa Young (2000-03).
U-M will open its home slate with a three-game series against Kent State (March 12-13) and three midweek matchups before kicking off Big Ten Conference play. The Wolverines will host Big Ten series against Nebraska (March 25-27), Penn State (April 8-10), Ohio State (April 22-24) and Minnesota (April 30-May 1) in addition to the first half of its annual home-and-home midweek series against Michigan State (April 6).
MSU will host the 2022 Big Ten tournament, May 12-14, in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines remain the reigning Big Ten Tournament champion after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event in each of the last two seasons. Michigan also is the league's three-time reigning regular-season champion.
Hutchins, who enters the season at the second-winningest coach in NCAA softball history, is in her 38th season with the Wolverines. U-M returns 13 letterwinners and welcomes a talented five-member freshman class that that includes five nationally-ranked prospects and was tabbed the nation's No. 11 recruiting class by Extra Inning Softball.
The Wolverines lost four starters from last year's team but return four starting field players and a pair of All-America pitchers in left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien and right-hander Alex Storako, who also was named the 2021 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year. U-M also returns outfielder Lexie Blair, who garnered Big Ten Player of the Year honors. Third baseman Taylor Bump joined Beaubien, Storako and Blair on the All-Big Ten first team last season.
Renewals for current season-ticket holders will be made available in January. Due to overwhelming demand, no new season tickets will be available this spring. Flex packs will go on sale Jan. 18, while group and individual-game tickets will be made available on Feb. 8. For more ticket information and details, please visit the softball ticket page.
