NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team dropped the first match then claimed nine in a row, earning bonus points in six, to cruise to a 34-3 win at Columbia on Friday night (Nov. 19) at Levien Gymnasium.
Michigan sacrificed an early lead to drop the opening bout at 174 pounds, but fifth-year senior Jelani Embree responded with a 10-2 major decision -- his second in as many appearances this season -- against Brian Bonino in the next match at 184 pounds and the Wolverines never trailed again. Embree scored on four takedowns, including two in the third period, and with the major in mind, finished on a late single leg and rode out the match for the bonus point.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked 10th nationally at 197 pounds, followed with a 13-5 major decision of his own against Joe Franzese behind five takedowns and 3:52 in riding-time advantage. Brucki finished on two high crotches, a single and a double for two takedowns apiece in the second and third periods. He boasts bonus points in five of his six wins this season.
Graduate student J.T. Correll bumped up from 197 pounds to beat Columbia heavyweight Danny Conley, 9-3, in overtime for his first ever collegiate dual win. Conley used a takedown to take the lead late in the third, but a locked-hands call cut the lead to one before Correll escaped with just three seconds left to force overtime. The Wolverine veteran shot in on a low single and locked up a cradle in the ensuing scramble to earn a takedown and four-point near fall in the extra frame.
Senior/junior Jack Medley, ranked 21st, claimed the dual's marquee match at 125 pounds, rallying from an initial deficit to beat 15th-ranked Joe Manchio, 6-3. Medley evened the match score with a fireman's dump in the waning seconds of the second period before scoring a quick escape in the third to take his first lead. He iced with another late takedown, finishing on a head in the hole in the final 10 seconds of the bout.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, ranked 16th, scored the most lopsided win of the dual with a 23-7 technical fall against Zack Witmer at 133 pounds. Ragusin scored seven takedowns, including three in the third period chasing, and a four-point tilt in the second and ended the match at 6:02. It was Ragusin's first action of the season after taking a forfeit win in the dual opener.
Junior/sophomore Pat Nolan earned his first collegiate dual win with a 16-6 major decision against Gunnar Fuss at 141 pounds. Nolan gave up the first takedown before scoring five of his own -- two apiece in the second and third periods -- and accumulating 2:29 in riding-time advantage.
Michigan followed Nolan's major decision with two more at 149 and 157 pounds. Graduate student Kanen Storr, ranked 18th at 149, scored six takedowns en route to a 15-4 win against Danny Fongaro. He jumped out early with three takedowns in the first period, including two off single-leg shots, and added two more singles in the third. It was his second straight bonus win.
Lewan, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, piled on points in his season debut with a 12-2 major decision against Kyle Mosher. After a scoreless first period, Lewan broke it open with a takedown and four-point tilt in the last 20 seconds of the second and tacked on two more takedowns, plus a point for 1:25 riding time, in the third.
Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine, ranked 11th, closed out the dual with a 3-1 decision over Joshua Ogunsanya at 165 pounds. Amine took an early lead with a first-period single leg, could not finish on a couple additional leg attacks in the second and fended off a couple third-period half shots to make it hold up.
Michigan (2-0) wraps up its road trip to the Empire State on Sunday (Feb. 21) when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y., to face Buffalo at 1 p.m. at Alumni Arena. The dual will be streamed live on YouTube.
