Wolverines Advance to Big Ten Tournament Semifinals with Win Over Badgers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Goals from Ryan Schultz and Uriel Zeitz and a solid defensive effort led the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday (Nov. 7) in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match at U-M Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Wolverines advance to the semifinal round and will face Penn State on Wednesday (Nov. 10) at noon at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Zeitz lifted the Wolverines to victory as he scored the game-winner in the 75th minute off a pass from Jason Bucknor, while Schultz netted his first career goal off a pass from Inaki Rodriguez in the 64th minute of the match.
U-M outshot Wisconsin 16-3, putting six shots on net in the 90-minute match, while goalkeeper Hayden Evans was tested just three times by the Badgers.
Michigan (8-6-3) put together a few opportunities early in the first half with back-to-back shots that led to corners but was unable to sneak one past the Wisconsin keeper. The Wolverines' best scoring chance came in the final minute of the first half when Umar Farouk Osman put a shot on goal for a big rebound to a breaking Marc Ybarra. He took a one-time shot that the Badgers keeper quickly reacted to, keeping the match scoreless heading into the halftime break.
U-M outshot Wisconsin 9-1 in the first 45 minutes of action with two shots on goal.
Wisconsin (7-7-3) struck five minutes into the second half as a ball that was brought to the corner was centered just outside the 18-yard box and ripped into the far-left corner of the net out of the reach of Evans to give the Badgers a 1-0 advantage in the 50th minute.
Once again, Michigan found a slew of opportunities in the 63rd minute with back-to-back shots, before earning a corner kick. Rodriguez placed a corner in the scrum in front of the net for Schultz to head down and in for his first career goal and equalizer in the 64th minute.
Evan Rasmussen looked to give the Maize and Blue the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute as he rushed into the box, but the shot was fired just wide of the right post and kept the game tied at 1.
The Wolverines continued to pressure offensively when Bucknor took the ball down the right flank and into the 18-yard box before crossing the ball to the left side of the field. Zeitz broke toward and net and leaped in front of his defender to shoot the ball into the bottom third of the net and give U-M a 2-1 advantage.
Michigan did not give up another opportunity to the Badgers in the closing 20 minutes, earning the win to advancing to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
