ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-seeded University of Michigan men's soccer team (8-6-3) will travel to No. 1-seeded Penn State on Wednesday (Nov. 10) for a Big Ten Tournament semifinal match against the Nittany Lions at Jeffrey Field. The noon match will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
U-M and Penn State will face off for the third straight season in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal. The Wolverines earned a 1-0 win in the 2019 season and the Nittany Lions grabbed a victory in the 2020-21 campaign.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan is 18-19-2 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament after earning the 2-1 win over Wisconsin in the quarterfinal match on Sunday (Nov. 7). The Wolverines won the Big Ten Tournament in the 2010 season, earning a 1-0 win in the semifinal against Wisconsin before going on to a 4-1 victory over Penn State in the championship game.
• Michigan is narrowly outscoring its opponents 23-21 and is outshooting its opponents 216-176 after giving up just three shots to the Badgers in its most recent outing.
• The Wolverine defense has been clutch for Michigan not only on the backline, but also offensively. This season four defenders have scored a goal, including Ryan Schultz, who netted his first career goal against the Badgers on Sunday (Nov. 7). Along with Schultz, Brennan Callow and Declan Gaffney have also both netted their first collegiate goals this season, while Umar Farouk Osman scored his 11th career goal in the 2021 campaign.
• Junior transfer Uriel Zeitz has turned it up late in the season after returning from injury. Zeitz scored his first goal as a Wolverine against Rutgers (Oct. 22) in just his second game back on limited minutes before netting the game-winner against Wisconsin (Nov. 7) in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal.
• Michigan's depth has been an important part of the team's success this season as it has yet to start the same starting lineup in any of its 17 matches so far. Due to a slew of injuries, the Wolverines have had to adapt and dig into their reserves all season, which allowed Callow to earn his first significant minutes and astarting role at the end of September. Michigan also did not see the return of graduate senior and MLS draftee Joel Harrison until the final game of the regular season.
