
Maize Tops Blue in Annual Intrasquad Exhibition Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team hosted its annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad meet on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 4), and the Maize team defeated the Blue team 315.800-312.150 inside Cliff Keen Arena.
The meet opened on floor exercise, where the Blue team took a 53.500-51.900 lead over Maize. Junior Paul Juda won the event for the Maize squad with a score of 14.300. Junior Adam Wooten (Blue) finished in second with a 13.900, and sophomore Evgeny Siminiuc (Blue) finished in third with a 13.450.
In the second rotation, the teams moved to pommel horse. Maize scored a 44.550 and Blue scored a 47.200. Juda won his second event title with a score of 13.800, junior David Willett (Blue) finished in second with a 12.250 and Cameron Bock (Maize) finished in third with a 12.150. The Blue team increased its lead to 100.700-96.450 after the event.
On still rings in the third rotation, Maize scored a 55.350 and Blue scored a 50.800. Sophomore Colin Stenger (Maize) won the event with a score of 13.900. Team Maize swept the still rings podium, with Juda finishing second with a 13.850, and sophomore Javier Alfonso finishing in third with a 13.800. Their efforts allowed Maize to take the lead 151.800-151.500. The .300-point lead after this rotation was the narrowest margin of the afternoon.
In the fourth rotation, the teams headed to vault, where Maize outscored Blue 54.850-57.050. Team Blue's Wooten and junior Casey Cummings shared the event title with a score of 14.550, while Juda (Maize) finished in third with a 14.450. The total score after the rotation stood at 208.550-206.650 in favor of the Blue squad.
On parallel bars in the fifth rotation, Maize posted a 53.200 and Blue a 51.750. Juda (Maize) won the event with a score of 14.550. Siminiuc (Blue) took second (14.150) and junior transfer Crew Bold (Maize) took third with a 13.500.
The meet closed with high bar, where Maize swept the top four spots to win the meet. Maize's Juda took home his fourth event title of the afternoon, scoring 14.850 on his routine. He was followed by Wooten (Blue) with a 13.950 and Bold (Maize) with a 13.800. Maize's domination on the high bar helped it come back from their previous deficit and surpass the Blue team by 3.650 points.
With four event titles and two additional top-three finishes, Juda took home the all-around victory with 85.800 points. Blue's Willett came in second with a score of 75.450.

Michigan will open the 2022 season on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Northern Illinois at Cliff Keen Arena.
