GENEVA, Ohio -- First-year phenom sprinter Ziyah Holman kept her debut campaign rolling Saturday (Feb. 13) as the University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the final day at the SPIRE B1G Invitational.
Holman posted one of the fastest 400-meter times in school history in her first-ever collegiate race at the distance, while several of her teammates from Friday's victorious distance medley relay had strong performances in the mile.
Holman remained undefeated in individual competition in what has been a historic first-year campaign, this time claiming the 400-meter title in 53.77, claiming the win by more than a half-second over the nearest competitor.
In a performance that will rank top-30 nationally this weekend, Holman also moved up to No. 3 in school history with the fastest-ever debut by a Michigan woman in the event. It closed out a weekend that also saw her run a leg of the winning distance medley relay on Friday.
Also doubling back from the winning DMR were Alice Hill and Katelynne Hart, who were second and fourth in the mile. Hill battled Ohio State's Allie Guagenti to the line and was edged out by 0.2 seconds in a season's best 4:41.09. Hart followed in a season's best 4:43.06 of her own.
Headlining action in the field events were third-place high jumper Katt Miner and fifth-place shot putter Amanda Schaare.
Miner cleared a season's best 1.73m (5 feet, 8 inches) on her first try, but could not muster the 1.78m (5-10) bar that ended up being the winner. Schaare kept a strong sophomore campaign going with a 15.63m (51-3.25) heave just shy of her personal record.
Boding well for the upcoming cross country season was the Wolverines' strong effort at the 3,000-meter distance as Kathryn House (9:31.76), Samantha Tran (9:33.89) and Kayla Windemuller (9:34.44) all ran personal bests for places second through fourth.
Michigan will return to Ann Arbor next weekend to host the Silverston Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19, in what will be the final tune-up ahead of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-27.
