ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the regular season on a high note at the Silverston Invitational on Friday (Feb. 19) inside the U-M Indoor Track Building in what was the final competition ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Michigan got historic victories by Ziyah Holman and Amanda Schaare, who were among six winners on the day for the Wolverines heading into the postseason.
Holman continued to impress as she remained undefeated in her debut collegiate campaign. Her winning time of 53.38 in the 400-meter dash moves her up to No. 2 in program history, just behind Jade Harrison. For context, Michigan has not seen a time this fast since 2017, and this will put Holman top-30 in the nation going into the championship portion of the season.
More history was made in the field events by junior shot putter Schaare. She threw a career best of 16.08m (52 feet, 9 inches), which not only earned her the win, but moved her up to No. 4 in University of Michigan history. Her career best puts her top-30 in the nation going into this year's championship season.
Although they may not have gotten the victory, pole vaulters Jessica Mercier and Mia Manson made history in their signature event. Mercier cleared a season's best 4.09m (13-5) for second, and Manson made it over a career-best 3.94m (12-11) to take third, marking the second-straight weekend that both cleared at least 3.90m. Never before tonight in school history had a pair of teammates accomplished that feat.
Michigan earned more victories both on and off the track. Katt Miner put up a season's best 1.74m in the high jump, Courtney Jacobson threw a season's best of 19.11m to claim the weight throw, and the long-jump victory went to Ameia Wilson with a distance of 5.62m. In the running events, Julia Sullivan joined Holman as a winner, running a 1:34.44 in the 600.
Michigan now turns its attention to the Big Ten Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 25-27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
