EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team earned its first win of the season, besting in-state rival Michigan State, 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 28-26, 25-19), on Wednesday (Feb. 17) at Jenison Field House.
Junior Paige Jones led the Wolverines with 16 kills and added 18 digs, while sophomore May Pertofsky hit a stellar .400 with 13 kills and a pair of service aces. Michigan outblocked MSU, 9-7, with sophomore Jess Robinson (five) and junior Kayla Bair (four) accounting for the total.
Michigan (1-0, 1-0 B1G) took the first set, 25-22. The opening stanza featured a trio of kills from Mruzik, Jones, and Bair. It was capped off by a service ace from freshman Brooke Humphrey to give the Wolverines the set-sealing point.
In the second set, Michigan State (2-5, 2-5 B1G) evened the match at 1, besting the Wolverines, 25-20.
U-M trailed the majority of the third set and by as many as seven points but pulled even at 21 and eventually took the set, 28-26, in a set that featured 29 kills -- 16 of them by Michigan.
U-M jumped out to a 9-5 lead, but MSU crawled back to cut the advantage to 19-17 before Michigan rattled off six of the next eight points to win the set, 25-19, and end the match.

Next up, U-M will return home to host Maryland in a two-game weekend set beginning Friday (Feb. 19) at Cliff Keen Arena. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
