ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 24-11 advantage in the third quarter and trailed for only 34 seconds in a 75-66 win over No. 15 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Crisler Center.
Junior Naz Hillmon turned in 27 points with eight rebounds in 31 minutes to lead a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Wolverines. Junior Amy Dilk stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six boards, six assists and three steals. Graduate student Akienreh Johnson went for 12 points and six rebounds, with junior Leigha Brown turning in 11 points and seven rebounds.
Michigan led by as many as six points in the opening frame, taking a 20-16 lead after 10 minutes behind six points each from Leigha Brown and Dilk.
OSU scored six of the first eight points of the second quarter to tie it at 22, but Dilk made a corner triple and then one at the line to push Michigan's lead back to five, 26-22, at the 4:57 mark.
Ohio State took its first lead of the afternoon, 27-26, on a pair of free throws with 2:34 to go.
Hillmon scored back-to-back buckets for the Wolverines, who held the Buckeyes scoreless the rest of the way to hit the break with a 30-27 halftime lead.
Hillmon and Dilk each had 10 points for the Wolverines at the half, with Leigha Brown chipping in six.
Michigan opened the third quarter with five straight points on a Hillmon bucket and a Leigha Brown corner triple for a 35-27 lead at the 8:17 mark, but OSU answered with a four-point possession to cut the lead in half on the next trip down.
U-M embarked on an 8-0 run that OSU tried to stop with two timeouts, the second coming with 5:11 remaining after a Johnson layup following a steal as Michigan's lead grew to 45-31.
Hillmon scored and drew the foul with 2:57 remaining but missed the free throw. U-M corralled the rebound and found sophomore Maddie Nolan for a triple, staking the home team a 50-34 lead at the 2:44 mark of the third quarter.
The Wolverines led by as many as 19 points in the period, heading to the fourth quarter with a 54-38 lead.
Ohio State turned up the pressure in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, getting within six points (67-61) with 1:49 to go. Hillmon scored on a putback on the ensuing possession and then split a pair of free throws with 1:04 left to seal Michigan's win.
Michigan embarks on a two-game road swing next week, kicking it off at Iowa on Thursday (Feb. 25). Tip time and television designation will be announced later this week.
