COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Freshman Sammi Woods led the University of Michigan women's soccer team past the University of Maryland with a career-high two goals and five points Thursday afternoon (March 18) at Ludwig Field.
Sarah Stratigakis scored the game-winner with the first of the day for the Maize and Blue, and Lily Farkas netted her first career goal, off a pass from Woods. Kacey Lawrence and Nicki Hernandez both assisted on one goal against the Terrapins.
Michigan (4-1-2) outshot Maryland, 20-7, and tested Terrapin keeper Kennedy Tolson 11 times. The Wolverines earned their third shutout of the season with senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall making four saves.
The Wolverines dominated the Terrapins (0-5-2) at the start, taking seven quick shots with Stratigakis collecting the ball at her feet off a Danielle Wolfe blocked shot and lofting it into the upper left corner over the keeper's head in the ninth minute to allow the Wolverines to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Michigan outshot Maryland 9-3 in the first half, with five shots reaching net in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Wolverines continued to pressure as Hernandez took the ball into the box and was pushed in the 75th minute to earn the penalty kick. Hernandez's shot was saved, but Woods was there to clean up the rebound with the one-timer and extend the U-M lead to 2-0 with just under 15 minutes to play.
Less than five minutes later, Woods passed the ball to a breaking Farkas, who ripped the ball into the bottom of the net to give the Maize and Blue a 3-0 advantage over the Terrapins.
Woods tacked on a final goal for the Wolverines in the 85th minute as Lawrence centered the ball in the box for Woods, who fired into the opposite corner to wrap up the 4-0 victory.
Michigan will conclude its road trip Sunday (March 21) when it travels to Penn State for a noon contest. The match against the Nittany Lions is set to be featured on Big Ten Network.
