BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Led by a victorious relay performance, the University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off its 2021 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday (March 26-27) at the B1G Indiana Invitational #1.
Michigan started Saturday with a win in the 4x100 relay, as Hanna Hearn, Lauren Morgan, Hannah Waller and Ameia Wilson combined to run 46.28 for the win by .17 of a second over a squad from Iowa. Hearn, Waller and Wilson were victorious in what was their first-ever outdoor competition at Michigan.
That newcomer trio performed well individually, too, as Hearn followed up with a third-place showing at 100 meters in 11.90 (+1.0m/s wind), Waller was third in the triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 12.35m (+3.5m/s) -- good for No. 7 in school history -- and Wilson was fifth over 200 meters in 24.37 (+1.5m/s).
Also making her outdoor U-M debut was thrower Amanda Schaare, who wasted no time adding her name to the record book. Schaare heaved 50.37m (165-3) in the discus for fifth place, moving to No. 8 in school history in the process.
Friday night's action was headlined by a third-place finish in the pole vault from reigning Big Ten indoor champion Jessica Mercier, who cleared 4.00m (13-1.5). First-year collegian Mia Manson made it over 3.85m (12-7.5) for sixth, which was also good enough for the No. 6 spot on the all-time U-M outdoor list in the event.
Michigan will next travel to Jacksonville, Fla., on April 2-3 for the B1G North Florida Invitational, where more Wolverines will make their 2021 spring debuts.
