PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Junior Nick Rowlett set school single-game records with 25 faceoff wins and 16 ground balls, but the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team lost, 22-12, to No. 5-ranked Rutgers on Saturday (March 6) at SHI Stadium.
Rowlett went 25-for-38 (66 percent) at the faceoff dot, while both Jacob Jackson (first career) and junior Bryce Clay (eighth career) marked hat tricks to lead the Wolverine offensive effort. U-M tied a team record with four extra-man goals and outshot Rutgers, 44-43.
After falling behind, 2-0, in the early going, U-M (0-3, 0-3 Big Ten) used a marker from Josh Zawada (11:20) and an extra-man goal from Avery Myers to knot the contest at 2. The two sides traded goals before Rutgers (3-0, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 3-1 run to close the opening quarter with a 6-4 lead. U-M had goals from sophomore Jake Bonomi and graduate student Tyler Papa over that span.
U-M secured its most narrow deficit of the contest at the 13:41 mark of the second, as freshman Michael Boehm put home a rebound goal to cut the Rutgers advantage to 6-5. The Scarlet Knights then went on a 4-0 run over the next eight minutes to bring the count to 10-5, until Clay ended the run with a tally at 5:36 on an extra-man chance. Jackson added U-M's third EMO goal of the half with 3:02 to go in the second quarter to make it 11-7. Rutgers' David Sprock beat the buzzer, scoring with one second to go in the quarter to increase the lead to 12-7 going in to the break. Michigan set a program record with three extra-man goals in the first half.
The Scarlet Knights outscored the Wolverines, 8-2, in the third quarter to hold a 20-9 lead after three stanzas. Michigan has a 3-2 scoring edge in the fourth with Jackson and Clay notching their third scores of the afternoon, while freshman Kyle Stephenson scored his first U-M goal with 2:57 to play.
