MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Junior Danny Zimmerman belted two home runs and drove in six runs as the University of Michigan baseball team scored early and often in a 21-5 drubbing of Minnesota on Friday (April 16) at Siebert Field.
Jordon Rogers led off the game with a home run, his first career long ball, high over the left-field wall. Zimmerman then led off the second inning with a titanic homer that sailed over the batter's eye in center field before launching a grand slam in the fifth inning. That blast marked Zimmerman's third consecutive at-bat with a homer and his fourth blast in a span of 11 at-bats.
Minnesota held a 2-1 lead after the first inning as Easton Bertrand connected for a two-run homer off Michigan ace Steven Hajjar.
Michigan, which put leadoff runners on base in each of the first four innings and scored in each of the first seven frames, took control with a four-run third inning thanks to bases-loaded RBIs from Benjamin Sems (single) Zimmerman (walk) and Tito Flores (hit-by-pitch) along with a run-scoring double-play ball.
Michigan scored again in the fourth inning as Griffin Mazur launched a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right field for an 8-2 lead before Zimmerman's blast as part of a seven-run inning.
Michigan scored three more times in the sixth and seventh innings with Ted Burton connecting for a three-run homer in the seventh.
Hajjar (2-0) battled his way to his second win of the year despite not having his best stuff. While the lefty struck out six consecutive Gophers at one point in the game, he filled up the box score in his five innings of work with six walks to go with seven strikeouts against four hits.
Clark Elliott led the offense with three hits while Rogers, Mazur, Zimmerman, Sems, Burton and Riley Bertram had two hits apiece.
The Wolverines and Gophers will renew the weekend series Saturday (April 17) in a 2 p.m. start at Siebert Field in a game that will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
